Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Canada agrees to cut tariff on Chinese EVs in return for lower tariffs on Canadian farm products
31·3 days agoSo a Chinese EV imported into the US via Canada would have a 6.1% + 25% = 31% total tariff?
That’s not too bad…
Imported cars into the US from Japan and the EU are tariffed at 15%, so given lower initial costs, Chinese-via-Canada cars should be competitive.

2·3 days agoIn a sense it’s refreshing to see that former Mayor Breed wasn’t in a hurry to sell her political connections to the highest bidder after she left office, but come on girl, you need to keep those influence muscles in shape…

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•BBC could soon make programmes for release first on YouTube under dealEnglish
6·4 days agoI’d imagine that the television license fee that the BBC is traditionally funded by has been on the decline for the last decade, hence the new-ish rush to market the Beeb’s content on Big Streaming, like Dr Who on Disney+

science@lemmy.world•Congress passes bill to fund U.S. science agencies, rebuffing Trump's requested cutsEnglish
11·4 days agoThe money will never reach the agencies, but will instead be used to erect golden statues of Trump on top of the smoldering ruins of our cities.

Those “overpriced” products in your local stores?
You’re supporting your neighbors.
There’s also the cost to you of shipping, even if it’s hidden inside the payment for your Amazon Prime membership.
Although these days with the dominance of chain stores, some percentage is shipped out of the community.
Also, shopping locally reduces single use plastic shipping package pollution.
I haven’t shopped on Amazon for over a decade, and only buy something online if I truly can’t find it locally.
And then I prefer buying from the company’s own website, then eBay, then AliExpress, before I’ll even think of one click inside Amazon.

California@lemmy.world•Marin’s king tide preparations worked — until they didn’t
1·6 days ago(Sausalito Vice Mayor Melissa Blaustein said) "The problem we’re really dealing with here is that these systems were designed in World War II,” she said. “The way our flood levels have changed, the way our sea levels have changed, just the way the general infrastructure has aged, they’re not sufficient for the times we’re living in.”
Either protect what they have, or the people and businesses have to become climate refugees.
I ate the Onion on this one…

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•MacKenzie Scott donates $45 million to LGBTQ+ youth mental health nonprofit the Trevor ProjectEnglish
2·7 days agoFrom a different article:
The Trevor Project operates a 24-hour hotline and digital crisis services for LGBTQ+ young people, reaching about 250,000 individuals annually.
Until last summer, it also staffed a specialized option within the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline tailored for LGBTQ+ callers.
That program ended in July after the Trump administration halted targeted federal funding, costing the organization about $25 million.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•Scott Adams, ‘Dilbert’ Creator, Dies at 68 (from prostate cancer)
32·7 days agoIt was an influential and popular comic back in the day when it broke out.
Scott Adams tarnished his legacy when he went off the deep end into conservatism, and it remains to be seen whether the comic will become even more dated than it already is, but it did capture something relevant to a lot of people back then.

Unfortunately this looks like a cynical move, and leaves doubt on how you’d actually vote on the Gaza genocide.

Anime@ani.social•[Episode] The Demon King's Daughter is Too Kind!! • Maou no Musume wa Yasashi Sugiru!! - Episodes 1-2 discussionEnglish
1·9 days agoThis is really good!
The production values are better than expected for a comedy, and I honestly cried at the touching parts.
Prediction: While the Demon Lord’s power and violence won him a kingdom, it’ll be his daughter Doux’s kindness that keeps it together.
zabadoh@ani.socialOPMtoSan Francisco@lemmy.world•Why San Francisco's most iconic buildings are sitting empty
6·9 days agoThe permitting bureaucracy nightmares in SF are well documented.
The Chronicle has a whole series of articles on the topic.
https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/sf-permit-nightmares-series/
For example, the now-opened new Bob’s Donuts location on Polk https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/bobs-donuts-sink-permit-20175685.php https://archive.is/NvBjF
Not listed in the series, but this guy lost $200K trying to open an ice cream store… https://www.sfchronicle.com/local/heatherknight/article/s-f-ice-cream-shop-hopeful-sees-dreams-melted-by-16116082.php https://archive.is/PPpHt
It made (prospective store opener Jason Yu) particularly angry that his cousin was able to open a nail salon in Daly City in just a fraction of the time he spent on Matcha n’ More. She’s painting nails after a few months of effort, but he never did scoop any ice cream.

Liverpool Football Club@lemmy.world•Conor Bradley injury: Liverpool defender to miss rest of season with significant knee injury sustained at ArsenalEnglish
2·9 days agoAbsolutely devastating news. The team defends much better with Bradley than without, and we’re shite at defending already.
I also think Palace’s price on an early Guehi transfer just went up.

This probably isn’t the first coyote to make it to Alcatraz, but there’s probably good reasons why a pack hasn’t established itself there, e.g. The island may be too small to support a pack, as the article implies.
