It beeps when it’s done.
It beeps when you press the button.
It beeps when you place it on the base.
But today, it beeps no more.
I classify this as a repair.
I prefer to jam some paper towel in the transceiver. You still get the notification, but now it’s just a vvv sound instead of a piercing beep.
women don’t find this kind of thing dull IME
I wish my kettle beeped when it was done.
But I totally understand wanting to make something quiet. I helped someone remove a speaker from a dishwasher because it would play a litle tune when it was done.
Was it a Samsung?
You bought a kettle that beeps? My god man!
I would have bought the simplest one with only an on/off switch. The thing’s a little too big
and it beeps, but now that I have it, I’ll keep it until it dies or becomes nasty.I have a fancy one with multiple temp setting and a keep warm feature and still no beeper. But I also drink “fancy loose leaf teas” that are best steeped at different temps. I mean, steeping the Iron Goddess of Mercy Oolong in boiling water will get you no mercy from her. Just a bitter nasty cuppa. But at 85C she is as gentle and merciful as a cool summer’s breeze after a day in the hot afternoon sun.
I didn’t even know kettles could have a beeper.
Sounds the same as what I have, except for the beep. The ability to set the temperature seems nice, though I’ve never needed it. Usually I just grab it before it boils.
I did the same with my fan. Fucker beeped when the sleep timer ended
That’s an insane design choice.
There’s a fan here that has a bright blue LED capable of lighting a whole room. That LED shines when the silent mode for the night is activated 🙄
So many electronics insist upon themselves. You’re a fan that blows away the fart smells in the bathroom, you are not the star of the show.
I miss the days when phones were getting smaller and smaller. Subtlety was still valued during that time and phone makers knew that while people did want a phone, they wanted it to be as out of their way as possible.
Then smart phones got powerful enough to drive large screens and things started getting louder with their presence, everything wanting a share of your attention. Smart appliances ironically are smart to get more attention (when I’d figure the main point of making things smart is to allow automation to reduce the amount of attention they need, not try to get you to interact with them via an app when you aren’t physically present).
It just seems like at some point project design was taken over by fucking marketers and we need to tell them to shut the fuck up already.
I mean… it depends how bad the fart smells are
Light a candle (before is better than after, I’ve tested this extensively. I should probably submit my documentation somewhere and at least go for an associates in farts or candles, idk) and if that’s not enough, they make this deodorant you can eat if you have weapon grade farts
OH YEAH? LISTEN TO THIS!
beepbeepbeeeeeeep
but what if my fart fan had RGBs…?
At first I loved the blue LEDs when they showed up in the early 2000 but I’ve grown to hate them. Why can’t a soft green or red be used.
And why do they have to shine with the power of industrial lasers??
Hans, switch on the Flakscheinwerfer!
Because it werfes Flakschein!
And do they need to be so bright that they light up the room?
When super bright LEDs became a thing they felt they needed to put them in everything. “It is new!” I went into my home office to get something and didn’t turn the light on and wondered what the blue glow in it was. It was an LED in a monitor telling me it was plugged in. My wife has me put black tape over leds on things like usb hubs because they are blindingly bright.
Don’t get me started on leds flashlights that all have multimode including rapid flashing so when the battery connection is poor, like when the flashlight gets old, if there is a split second break in power it switches to rapid flashing. Just what I need when trying to get around in the dark.
The comment so nice, you posted it twice.
Stupid browser fart!
I use a black permanent marker on all blindingly bright LEDs. Most of mine were actually sticking out so was able to paint over them without messing up the rest of the device. Tones them down nicely, but you can still see if it’s on.
Is that how you make black lights?
I clipped the wires in all of my salvaged case fans.
Gaffer tape. Gaffer tape everywhere. And for those LEDs that you actually want to see, but not light up the whole room, two pieces of gaffer tape with a hair’s breadth between them. Makes for an indicator light that can only really be seen when your looking straight at it.

Or even worse, bike headlamps.
bike headlamps.
i’d love to hear your complaints. mostly so if i’ve got something wonky with my bike i can fix it. i’m not trying to blind anyone with that damn thing, just make sure both i can see and be seen. mine’s got less than half the luminosity of a car headlight, so we might be talking about different types of headlamps tho. some people get nuts with their headlamps.
I used a flashlight mount on the handlebar, and pointed it at the ground in front of me instead of forward into space. Worked very well and didn’t shine into people’s eyes. I also didn’t use the blinkenlights mode on the rear light despite it being the popular option around here — it’s just annoying.
I’ve had a run-in with blinding lights when I was in a group of people cycling at night, and on a path through an unlit park we encountered a group riding the opposite way. Couldn’t see shit except their lights.
beeped when the sleep timer ended
Oh, so, it was an alarm clock after all
Time’s up, now get back to work
I have a bluetooth headset with a stupid bright blue led angled perfectly to reflect in one’s glasses, because I’m too stupid to notice the music means the thing is on, I guess… At least I know the designer has perfect vision.
I had to do the same to my fridge. Normally it’s supposed to beep if you forget the door open or after a power outage, which is good, but at one point it started erroring out and beeping just randomly, so measures had to be taken.
Did you fix the switch or remove the buzzer? If the switch is bad, the inside light mat be on all the time. I’ve heard of feed spoiling that was next to the light.
I simply desoldered the buzzer. I think the problem is in some of the sensors, because the thermostat for the fridge part shows an error instead of letting me adjust the temperature (but I’m guessing it’s still falling back somewhere within the adjustable range). I’m positive that the light turns off on a closed door, I can hear the relay switching it off and I can see the light coming on with a delay (like it normally does) after opening the door.
Mine used to beep when I left the door open for a certain time (usually happened when putting groceries away), but at some point it stopped. Maybe I held the button too long and muted it instead of snoozing the alarm. Either way, I like it better like this.
You can lower the volume of those piezo alarms by putting a 6-32 screw through the hole. It will push on the diaphragm on the inside and muffle the vibrations. You can actually dial in the volume you want by turning the screw just right. Or just kill it with fire
Or you can do like I did and lose that frequency range of your hearing. I no longer hear the washer or dryer or the microwave…Problem solved!
What about a smoke alarm?
I don’t think I’m up for a screw that short

(Obviously your solution is far more graceful and honestly solid work I just…cannot even)
I classify this as a repair.
An upgrade, even.
I hate that modern appliances beep constantly. Whatever happened to giving a shit about being annoying or not? Old appliances would beep or ding once. If you’re the idiot and leave something sitting forever that’s on you. I would rather have my food get cold than my microwave beep every five seconds indefinitely. Sometimes finishing up a task that is going to take 20 more seconds is the right thing to do, stop aggressively beeping at me.
I turned off the beeping on my microwave and it was actually really awkward pressing buttons without the aural feedback that I had become accustomed to.
That kind of beeping is fine by me. What I hate is when it’s done it will beep every few seconds indefinitely.
My friend just bought a toaster that plays a tune when it’s done.
A toaster. That needs to tell you when it’s done.
My toaster just triggers the toast catapult when he’s done with his thing. Noise notifies me, toasted bread flies around, what’s not to like?
The toast artillery.
o7
The … toastillery, if you will.
A toast distillery? Hmm…
For the pure essence of breakfast
Highly concentrated eau de toast.
what’s not to like?
it’s not a trebuchet!
Must… Not… Build…
My rice cooker plays twinkle twinkle little star and I always dance to it when it’s done.
The difference is the rice cooker doesnt have metal parts launching upwards creating a very loud distinct sound that already indicates in the room that the toast is done.
With that said there were some really cool old toasters from like the 1950’s that had self toasting where you put the slices in and it automatically drops down and then rises quietly back up when its done. If that one had a small song I could at least understand that.
My cheap rice cooker has a single switch and when it’s done it flips position. That sucker is super loud, and I love how basic it is
Only gripe is that you have to unplug it to turn it off fully, otherwise it’s in “warm” mode
Those are so fucking cool
Edit: Sunbeam Radiant Control
For the uninitiated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OfxlSG6q5Y
You’re welcome.
All of my Korean appliances sing the songs of their people once they have accomplished the most menial of tasks.
Does it require a Bluetooth connection? Lol I wish that was entirely a joke question
as if the house rattling launch of the toast wasnt enough to tell you, your neighbors, and the russian seismograph monitors on the other side of the world that the toast was ready.
but think: what if you could tell the toaster what tune to play?
and what if the toaster played La Llorona instead anyways, in different styles every morning, because The Toaster has better taste in music than you
Wouldn’t help the people in the office that go toss a bagel in the toaster then never come back for their burnt charcoal that got stuck because it was too plump to pop up
Skill issue
I have a relatively new appliance that doesn’t beep on completion. It sings. A song. Like, . . . a 20 second song. Like an ice cream truck.
Yeah I just moved from an apartment with a washer like that. It’s cute for the first 2 seconds, the first couple of uses. After a while it feels almost passive aggressive
OP woke up dull, will be going to bed tonight a king
Next, remove the stupid loud beep from the smoke detectors.
I know right?! It’s giving me a headache and I feel just so tired.
I mostly solved that by not having fires often.
I would love if that was enough. My fire-and-spider detecor is very loud.
Ah, my dust detectors wake up the kids, myself and the neighbour’s dog.
Aaaargh, this hits too close to home. I gave up on the pause-every-10-minutes at 3 am on the last one and drowned the sumbitch in the old diaper bucket…
Smart. Need to remember that.
Nooo, not my precious alarm clock… it’s the only thing that still works for me. I always manage to sleep through the loudest alarm volume on two different phones, regardless of whatever tones or music I choose. Not even El Sonidito works anymore.
I’ll be dead (metaphorically, at the least) if the smoke detector stops beeping for me :(
I am so done with kitchen appliances fucking beeping at me. The only beeps I accept is the one to let me know I didn’t close the freezer. My stove does not need to beep when it’s turned on, beep when a plate is selected, then beep with every step of temperature increase. Don’t even get me started on the microwave, when it is done heating, it just keeps beeping forever, LOUDLY.
Like, FUCK YOU I WILL COME WHEN I SO GOD DAMNED PLEASE. One ping only please. Jesus it infuriates me.
This seems to be the problem with the tech trend of removing tactile knobs or actual buttons.
Now we have these “touch” screens that can only provide feedback through annoying beeps, because you can’t feel them or hear them click anymore.
My electric kettle for example has a lever to press down and start it. No beeps needed, because when it’s done you hear the mechanism click off as the lever returns to its off position.
On the other hand my air fryer can get fucked with that one “everything knob”. I’ve accidentally turned it a smidge many times pressing it in to start. This resets all the settings that I have to dial back in and makes me want to yeet the fucker out the window.
if only they used the same damn knobs they used in the 1980s. what measured analog resistance instead of checking for bumps and shit. there’s a damn chip in there, use it to convert the analog to digital. the analog dials have SO MUCH BETTER tactile response.
I know right?! Knobs are the best; I love feeling them with my hands. Nothing can replace the tactile satisfaction of a good knob. Instant feedback when you give it a twist, with ridges and texture for your pleasure.
Sometimes I find knobs can get a bit stiff, you really have to give them a good jerk when that happens.
My 20 year old microwave has multiple beeps? Like soft ones when you press stuff, a couple of loud ones when it’s done. Some acoustic feedback is nice.
My recent kitchen appliances just beep the same volume regardless of what’s happening. To loud when using the device, to soft to properly notify you when completing a task. That air fryer experience hits close to home. Fuck modern appliances. Although my new washing machine is a shitload more efficient.
I don’t want smart tech, I want old fashioned pre 2008 dumb tech. Just make it home assistant compatible, kthx.
But then how will the multinational corporations be able to get your data? 🥺👉👈
Wait shit, the face is supposed to be first? I’ve been 👉👈 🥺ing like an idiot
Now we have these “touch” screens that can only provide feedback through annoying beeps, because you can’t feel them or hear them click anymore.
We’re so buried in our phones. Instead of giving someone a real smile, we send an emoji. I mean, we don’t even look at porn at our computer anymore, we look at it on our PHONE?
Someone needs to get spanked
Well someone is gonna have to do it!
RTFM, there might be settings to stop the beep.
Rage the fucking machine?
How dare you.
Oh the fucking microwave. Newer ones supposedly have a setting to turn off the beep but mine doesn’t. It constantly beeps when it is done which is a delight if I’m in the bathroom trying to excremeditate.
Actually it’d be quite nice if stoves and ovens made a noticeable background sound when they were on. Like something pleasant, but noticable, so you don’t accidentally leave them on.
Does not help. If you don’t notice the burner is hot, you’d think the flame would be obvious. It’s not
My new stove beeps when it is on but there’s no pan which seems like a good idea at first, but that means it yells at me when I pick a pan up such as to help the butter or oil spread around
i’d at least want to be able to program how i got yelled at. if i’m getting yelled at in a kitchen it doesn’t feel right in bitcode. can we at least train the stove to wave a knife around while it yells at me?
This post inspired me. I managed to mute my pressure cooker even though the mute function is not mentioned anywhere in the manual. I did a little dance.
Do you mean that you blocked the steam release valve?
This should be a service. And some fancy EU regulation banning ones you can’t mute.
Luckily this is a pretty simple thing to diy, at least for a kettle.
If anyone wants to repeat this, but doesn’t know how:
- Unscrew the bottom (if the screws are different, keep track of which goes where)
- Locate the beeper and…
- Remove it with a soldering iron
- Cut its legs off with some kind of clipper
- If you have neither, wiggle it until the legs break, or carefully rip it off the board
Is there no need to replace it with a resistor of equal value?
I doubt a beeper would be put in series with something important…
Fair enough. It’s just in my mind that anytime I see one of these posts they always replace the component with a resistor, so I was wondering why this post didn’t. But that makes sense, so thanks!
I mean, then again…
I don’t think piezo buzzers are exactly resistive loads, or that cutting speakers would break appliances either way. My kettle works the same as before, just less annoying.
keep track of which goes where
Is it a legit repair if you don’t have some parts left over after reassembling? 🤔
In the best case it’s the buzzer.
😂
Yeah! Yeah! CUT ITS FUCKING LEGS OFF!
IT BEEPS NO MORE.
Have they stopped, Clarice? The beeping of the appliances?
Will it still work even though there’s no longer a connection across where the beeper used to be? Got a toaster that beeps so high that even our cat gets freaked out
I can’t make guarantees, but it should be fine. There’s some microcontroller inside that’s programmed to turn the voltage high or low. It just flicks the switch and doesn’t know or need to know what happens behind it.
They’d mumble something about safety I bet, I’m on team remove the beeper however.
