Sure, the zat is a bit of a gimmick, but I always thought the three escalating effects kinda fit the vibe of the goauld tech in general.
Just don’t ever shoot anything 3 times in short succession to hide bodies when you’re trying to sneak around, because that definitely won’t help unless you’re in the 60s.
It’s interesting that it wouldn’t work on his father a season or 2 down the line.
They do explain how Teal’c’s brainwashing was more involved (or something) than Ryac’s brainwashing. It was just a different type of brainwashing, so an electric shock wouldn’t fix it.

I never would have considered that episode a clip show. It was full of flashback scenes, but almost all of the flashbacks were entirely new footage. Those flashbacks actually gave us a lot of new background info about Jaffa culture and such.
Kelnorim was similar, in some ways. Every now and then, the a character solves the problem somehow by going into kelnorim.
