Anyone who values their mental health and acuity would do well to stay away from TikTok and other short-form media.

Once you lose your ability to focus and pay attention for long periods of time, it’s incredibly difficult to get that back.

I’m still boycotting comic books, no time for boycotting TikTok.

I should say specifically watching microdramas instead of specifically actual TV dramas. Tik Tok and short-form content has its place, but it’s for cheap laughs.

It mainly exists to milk more money out of content that has been consumed already.

Why make something new if you can just crop it poorly and post 8-10 short clips out of the same 10 minute video. Thats 8-10x ad revenue right there while programming people to enjoy commercial length content.

All it is doing is shortening attention spans and making more feed addicts to fuel the brainrot algorithm.

I have a functional attention span and don’t enjoy brain rotting misinformation blasted at me in 30 second chunks by an algorithm pushing propaganda while stealing as much data as they can from me. Not to mention the shit Ai voice/Ai slop onslaught and that stupid rain dancing they do to appease the algorithm.

          What’s there to like?

I use TikTok as a replacement for old school YouTube, as in stumble upon small content creators where you can actually engage with the author. Even video length cap is now similar to old YouTube (it’s been ages since cap was increased). Lots of quirky stuff, like a guy in drag doing 80s soap operas. Not sure if it’s available everywhere but in EU we get „following only” type of feed too.

Algorithm will feed you misinformation and brainrot if you engage with that type of content (which includes debating people in comments). I just don’t.

Thinking the algorithm will only show you what you what you’re engaged with is wearing rose tinted glasses.

It’s another for profit social media that will harvest as much data they can from you to sell and to target you with ads and misinformation.

At least you can block YouTube ads on all platforms.

If you care about creators go to platforms like Mastodon and Peertube and support them directly.

And that’s why I recommend „following” feed with „for you page” used mostly for discovery (which is way ahead of everyone else, YouTube, Instagram or Peertube).

I didn’t give unnecessary permissions to the app. They can watch how I behave which is fine. It’s a commercial enterprise that has to make money to be able to afford streaming videos at this scale.

At least you can block YouTube ads on all platforms.

All ads I see are skippable.

You go ahead and convince normies to move to some obscure platform while I enjoy life.

You are still training their algorithm and Ai. The “for you page” is purely based off your data and optimized to hide their slop inside a package that was tailored to appeal to you. That’s fucked up.

They can watch how I behave which is fine.

Fuck off with that shit. That is absolutely not fine and tells me you have no idea about privacy or how much data they are extracting from invading your life.

All ads are unacceptable. Especially targeted ads. You should look into how ad space bidding works.

Didn’t realize I was talking to a normie here on the obscure defederated platform Piefed lol
