Fediverse@lemmy.world•Would an ActivityPub enabled fediverse alternative of Discord be possible?English
1·8 hours agoNo-one wants to use these things at scale and the interconnectiveness between different instances on these things are just non-existent.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Would an ActivityPub enabled fediverse alternative of Discord be possible?English
2·16 hours agoHow did you find them? How many people are in them? There’s no hub for community discovery for matrix-based communities, to my knowledge.
As I said in another comment: It seems to me a hypothetical federated Discord client needs to adopt the same model as the fediverse with community lookup functions where the discord-like instances would federate with other discord instances and be able to browse rooms, in something akin to the Discord Discovery tool.

2·17 hours agoIts uses are few and far between. Matrix just doesn’t offer that at all.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What should we be doing, individually, to increase Lemmy's userbase?English
3·1 day agoI mean I run television@piefed.social. It’s only active because of me. I make up the majority of the posts. But when I do post, I get activity.

2·1 day agoRight, but it almost doesn’t matter because no-one is actually using matrix in the same way they might use Discord. It just isn’t being used socially for hobbies and interests and a part of that is it’s design and bugs and tedium getting set up.

1·1 day agoIts buggy, it just doesn’t really look like Discord. It is a chore for new users to use. There’s no useful community discovery.

1·1 day agoOf course by inactive, I mean no activity.
I run television@piefed.social. 90% of the posts are by me. I forced it into having a presence. It however does get engagement when I post.
This is true for many communities.

1·1 day agoThe Stoat development cycle is really, really slow. This is why it’s just fallen away.

1·1 day agoUnmoderated is different. Many aren’t though, even if low activity.

2·1 day agoRipping communities away from moderators to merge them is going to drive them away.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Would an ActivityPub enabled fediverse alternative of Discord be possible?English
41·1 day agoWell yes, that’s the problem. Matrix is just used for tech/troubleshoot issues and it’s buggy as hell.
It isn’t a social experience like discord. It is a gap in the fediverse

PieFed Meta@piefed.social•Is there a list of sites that are blocked by piefed?English
7·1 day agoThis would depend on your specific piefed instance.
Oi, cool it. I don’t want to just expel someone from piefed.social for that - but don’t be hurling comments like that.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•FYI: Reddit trademarked some community names (Digg link)English
1·2 days agoThe key words here are “allowed to be acknowledged as existing”. Not acknowledging a community’s existence means not federating it. .world does that with db0’s piracy community because of EU laws, and it’s basically an instance-imposed community ban. Pyfed has/had a hard-coded denylist of community names in the source code that stopped them from being federated, and the result was none of the instances running unmodified Piefed were able to access them.
No, that’s just relevant to the mass community lookup tool. Piracy communities can still be federated individually on the Piefedverse (so to speak), and I believe that Rimu has removed that term from that.
I’m not trying to get you to do so. Just noting that it isn’t inherently more “memey” than lemmy.
This makes no sense. How you interpret the design doesn’t come into it. You know piefed.social (the largest instance) shows the same communities as lemmy.world, right? Show me a meme community that apparently only exists as viewed from piefed.social.
You might be seeing it via card mode rather than compact mode.

Piefed is structurally further along here at coping with larger audiences.
