The same idiots who bring a toddler to the art museum. I can keep myself together when I follow my girlfriend 3 hours walking at the slowest possible pace through a boring ass exhibition; the toddlers, not so much.
But maybe it was an employee and the screams of the child enhance my art experience somehow.
apple is scummy just like the other big tech companies but it’s one of the least scummy out there, especially wrt open source.
Maybe with regard to open source, because that benefits them as a company - let others fix their bugs for free. But definitely not with regard to free software.
That is why I self-host https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped ; it is a bit of work to setup, especially because you need a SSL certificate. But man that thing is fast.
But you can also just play the video in mpv.

Web technologies on desktop applications was always a bad idea.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Spell checker hallucinates Anaconda bug report
2·23 days agoIn fact I thought it was so wonderful how you could hear multiple applications at the same time!
That was possible with ALSA and the “dmix” plugin years before pulseaudio came out.
The FreeBSD desktop exists, it is called “Mac OS”.
Linus Torvalds used the GPL for his kernel, forcing companies to release the source code if they improve it and distribute it. The main userland was a lot of GPL licensed GNU software for a very long time, with a similar effect.
The BSD folks, on the other hand, decided to give everything away, by using much more “liberal” licenses. Apple took the BSD base, bolted their UI on top of it and gave almost nothing back. That would not have happened if BSD was GPL licensed.

31·23 days agoHow long have you been around in the linux world? All of them were absolute dogshit when they came out and everyone complained (for Gnome, that means Gnome 3), but redhat kept pushing them anyway. For instance, when pulseaudio was new it caused crackles, noise, high cpu etc. everywhere, but they used their business connections to have vendors support pulseaudio exclusively, which meant you had to install it if you wanted to use Skype or for various games, even though ALSA was (and is) just fine. Nowadays it gets replaced by pipewire.
I guess I don’t need to explain the systemd drama; it has gotten much better, but what still sucks is that it drops you into a rescue mode when it can’t mount some filesystem that is not even necessary for boot (e.g. /mnt/data). And when you do not have a root password set up, but use
sudofor everything, you are screwed because systemd demands the root password nevertheless, meaning you gonna need to boot from a live usb or similar just to fix one line in fstab. That is the stupidest shit imaginable.

52·24 days agoNot really, it matches the Redhat software quality that we had a joy to experience for the last 10+ years (systemd, pulseaudio, Gnome, …)
Atmosphere is one thing, but not being able to see anything in the game without having to play in a completely dark room is another thing. Skyrim got it right, the dungeons are dark but you can see without issues, even in a well-lit room. And then there are the people who install mods that make the nights pitch black.
Thank you for providing that link.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•(SOLVED) [Controller] SISR on Linux - how can I prevent a Wine app from picking up inputs from both the real and virtual controllers?
11·1 month agoWhy do you need SISR for this? If he game is receiving input from the real stream controller (as you wrote), why not just disable SISR and go along with that?
Anyway, what you can try is to disable one of the controllers in the “Game Controllers” section of control, as outlined here: https://github.com/AntiMicroX/antimicrox/wiki/Methods-for-Disabling-Joystick-Reading-in-Linux
That website also include some more advanced methods, but I don’t think they will apply to your usecase, unless you want to run SISR as a different user.

Or you should. This is called Parkinson’s law, first stated in 1952. https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20191107-the-law-that-explains-why-you-cant-get-anything-done
This has observed especially with the advent of “robots” for household tasks, e.g. the dishwasher or the washing machine. Before these machines existed, wifes spent about 51 hours per week cleaning the home. After the machines where there, they spent about 52. These people never had any skill to begin with. They only have a codebase now because of AI.
Do you bully people for their phone use IRL? Does anyone take you seriously? I bet not.
It sounds more like that this is something you do. You write whole paragraphs defending your “iphone choice”.
I’d rather have a phone by a computer company than an advertising company.
There are other companies than Google and Apple who sell smartphones, e.g. FairPhone.
lol what are you talking about? I am not “mad” about anything. I just think it is ridiculous to pay money to block ads, when there are tons of free ad blockers available.

I thought that was a girl right from the beginning.
