5·11 hours agoHe might be better in being harder for MAGA cultists to like. But I’m not sure how much they care about being liked, when they’re talking about simply cancelling elections.

2·12 hours agoIt wasn’t that long ago that being a fascist was absolutely unacceptable in mainstream society, and the idea that the USA and other wealthy countries could fall to fascism seemed fantastic.

3·1 day agoYou’d also have to dismantle the machinery behind him, such as the Heritage Foundation. And incapacitate multbillionaires like Peter Thiel. But without Trump as the leader there would be some hope that MAGA could lose its appeal to a number of its supporters.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Trump is reportedly taking aim at Canada and raising alarms about its ‘vulnerability’
24·1 day agoCanada’s southern border is huge and almost its entire population lives very close to it. The USA could occupy our major cities very quickly and our military is far from a match for theirs. The whole system has been designed on the assumption that the USA will not become an enemy and can be reasonably expected to help defend Canada from other enemies, and Canada can manage with relatively small forces since it’s geographically quite well protected except on the southern border. It was not designed to anticipate a rapid takeover of the USA by Nazis who immediately decide to attack all their former allies. We wrongly assumed the USA had its shit together even just a little bit.

Remember all the US Republicans who said “this isn’t us” and then supported it anyway? I don’t trust these people as long as they continue to identify as Conservative voters. All it means is they know fascism is shameful, but they still want it.

27·1 day agoYeah you need hardware for that. They’re making it so we can’t get hardware and we can’t self-host.

Is the US military by now really, as some want to imagine, populated by courageous conscience-torn patriots with a rock-solid allegiance to the constitution, prepared to take the huge personal risk of disobeying orders out of love for the laws and people of the USA? Or is it a bunch of young people who are bored until they see some action, who’d rather do as they’re told and get through in the hopes of better opportunities later, commanded by the remaining generals Trump has picked for their loyalty to him above the country? Probably somewhere in between, but some journalists’ hope that the military’s moral sense and commitment to their oaths will lead to mass disobedience of illegal orders seems highly optimistic. The US military has a long history of invasions and atrocities, and although it messes people up and they may struggle to live with what they have done afterwards, they still tend to do it.
