Ah yes, this is why the phrase “no good deed goes unpunished” does not exist.

Casual Conversation@piefed.social•So... after nearly a decade of using a temporary fix for the heater, it finally stopped working and now my house is cold and it's depressing.
16·2 days agoDid you see the thread on electric blankets? Absolute game changer, especially when room temps are kept low, and much cheaper to purchase and maintain than most other heating solutions. You don’t need to keep it on your bed either; wrap yourself in an electric blanket with a thick blanket or two (or even a comforter) on top to insulate it when you’re on the couch or at a desk. It’s the closet thing the Western world has to a kotatsu in terms of comfort. Bonus tip: wear heavy clothes and crank up the dial and marinate in the heat until you’re uncomfortable, and you’ll feel ready to venture into the rest of the freezing house, at least for a little while.

Technology@lemmy.world•ublock Origin can get rid of Cookie BannersEnglish
1·17 days agoI mean, it’s not like it’s a time-consuming thing to do. I haven’t checked in with everyone, but at least one person is still using the setup two years later and is grateful for it so I call that a win. But my original point was about not making assumptions that people who use ublock are going to be tech savvy.

3·17 days agoI’ve installed ublock on the phones of some very non-techie older adults in my life, specifically because they’re non-techie and never would have even known ublock existed otherwise. Granted these folks are definitely not on Lemmy either, but point is there’s a wide range of users out there

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that electric blankets are cheap and incredibly cozy
15·18 days agoMy understanding is that they used to be a fire hazard a few decades ago, but have improved significantly in safety since. Plus you don’t have to sleep with it on; using it to warm up the sheets before you crawl into bed is often sufficient, depending on your climate. Or you can use it elsewhere in the house, such as on the couch or a reading chair.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that electric blankets are cheap and incredibly cozy
10·18 days agoYMMV, but the cheap one I bought only lasted two winters before the electric part died, while the more expensive two I bought have lasted five years and counting.

6·20 days agoI skimmed the original study (published in 2014).
This is a correlation study, as are nearly all large-scale population studies. Everything (including number of produce servings a day consumed, physical health, and mental health) is self reported. The author says they controlled for income among other variables, but I’m calling SUS, because there’s a lot of factors regarding diet/food accessibility not easily captured in a handful of basic data points. In other words, there might be something here, but absolutely nothing has been proven.
Remember, ice cream consumption is not a driver of the murder rate.*

You know, there’s a shortage of RAM right now, not pixels.

Conclusion(s): Women with rectovaginal endometriosis were judged to be more attractive than those in the two control groups. Moreover, they had a leaner silhouette, larger breasts, and an earlier coitarche.
Okay but like, this actually does point at a potential cause (as in, why it persists/is so common in the population) of the condition, which is sexual selection.
I’ve never done it before because I lack the facilities, however this video goes over the process:
How often are you watering? Is it by hand or irrigation system? Is there runoff, e.g. from a nearby lawn? If the issue is your soil drains poorly, you might be able to condition it by breaking up any compact soil and amending it with organic matter (and maybe sand). However this is fairly labor intensive and takes time to do properly (and might not fix the issue, depending on the cause). Building raised beds might be a faster and more effective solution.
Peppers have a fairly small root ball, so you could always grow them in grow bags (I’d recommend one 10 gallon bag per plant); it’s nearly impossible to over-water grow bags (but on the flip side, it’s very easy to under-water them!) Plus growing them in bags makes it super easy to overwinter them, assuming you have access to a garage/basement.

Godammit you made me think I missed a huge news story
