  • Right, they don’t need it for themselves. USA and any other power would use it for a convenient bit of force projection, preventing 3rd parties from consolidating power outside of their block. So, say Venezuela wanted to ship stuff to the Philippines. Around South America is dangerous, Panama can be expensive, but arctic is more and more open and quick, so theoretically these example countries could find some mutually profitable stuff to bring back and forth to each other.

US can get a tax or otherwise frustrate any deals if they control that shipping lane. The Alaska/Russia choke point is contested and I’m not sure who has better control on that area.

  • Disruption is the thing that’s like ideology in this instance. There’s no path for a cult member to disrupt things enough to become the new cult leader. There’s the chain of succession or whatever it’s called, and that relies on the legitimacy of the system to be used. If that legitimacy is disrupted, the only people that can take the lead position will be the people controlling the military, which will be nobody in governance because the commander in chief will be dead.

This is one reason I guess the ICE budget is getting juice, so that when that change in leadership comes there is some force behind the change.

  • You got me, but without a kit I don’t think prior experience with gunshot wounds would make up for the time lost waiting on the second person. And it’s not like this was an either/or. It’s completely asinine to not let the doctor that is standing right there access to someone actively bleeding. Even the most casual assessment would save the paramedic on their way a minute and would have the attempts to stop the bleeding happen minutes earlier. That’s not a trivial amount of time. This level of negligence is homicide
