I feel like a lot of the responses here are from people who didn’t read the article.
This is a triage that allows the caller to bypass the ai with a simple no answer.
This is one use of this technology that can actually improve response times, and likely* isn’t being used to cut staff.

This is intended to handle the increase of calls that are related to one incident, so callers get automatically routed to an AI agent who asks if they are calling regarding the incident. If the answer is yes, then callers can receive information or updates, and if it’s no, then the callers are transferred to a human.

There’s been a lot of stories of 911 dispatchers running ragged.
Overworked, exhausted, abused by callers. One 911 dispatcher hung up on a mass shooting in buffalo.
It’s not even a “hire more people” problem. It’s like the people who moderate and flag abusive material. They only can do it for a few months before they end up really fucked up. Many cities consolidate 911 into a single place to cut costs. It’s a big problem nobody talks about.
I dont think AI is the entire solution. But it might be a start.
Locally the vet and some fast food places have rolled out Ai and it’s been terrible. The vet takes forever to actually get anything and it doesn’t understand things said sometimes. The staff has also said they got a ton of terrible feedback about ai. For fast food the ai constantly gets things incorrect or can’t process certain questions and a person has to actually jump on. These are just my experiences in non emergency situations too. Ai is just a tool in it’s infancy and should be used for internal helping things only right now in my opinion.
at the government level we need more local offices and more in person and person on phone service. collect taxes devil bless it.
If you say stuff like “shots fired” or “active shooter” right away does it get you to a human faster?

Thank you and yikes, instead of boosting funding into their lifeline, they resort to
cut cornersimprove efficiency by sorting calls with AI. Seems a tad unethical, to do this in a field where every second counts and the consequences mean life or death… But hey, i guess more taxes for the rich is socialism and you can’t have that, slippery slope towards communism. /s
It seems like there could be good potential implementation of AI into the overall system but nothing is more satisfying to administrators than firing people, so that’s how its success will be judged.
There is no potential good in putting any obstacle whatsoever between someone experiencing an emergency and a trained human being who can directly get help.
I don’t believe they are suggesting such. The concept of AI as a helpful tool for people trying to complete a task is still valid. Most good work includes repetitive, tedious tasks and AI can potentially automate some of that away.
I believe the problem is that, first and foremost, we’re attempting to throw all of the world’s knowledge into a black box and power it with all of the worlds resources while praying that it will result in genuine General Superintelligence. Its reckless, destructive, wasteful, and naive.
Second, most of those in power see it as a replacement for those workers and as an avenue for cost reduction. Middle management that is deluded into believing that they are the reason everything gets done. Narcissistic executives who think their “genius” is the key to their company’s success. If those pesky workers beneath them would just sacrifice literally everything for their bosses and literally obey their boss’s every command, including commands like “just do it faster” everything would be perfect… they believe. The false promises of AI replacing labor gets them rock fucking hard.
Wait, you’re suggesting that the higher up on the corporate ladder, the less they understand how the company works?

There is though. High profile events cause high volumes of 911 calls. If AI can be used correctly, perhaps even with Geo data, callers likely calling about the same event 400 others are calling about at the same time can get an informational “we know, thank you. But press 1 to talk to a human if still needed”. This allows the humans to help Grandpa having a heart attack across town instead of speed answering dozens of calls about the same fender Bender on the interstate during rush hour.

Not everyone in an emergency has the ability to press 1. Implementing something which requires them to do so sacrifices those people, and I find that unacceptable.
There’s a simple answer, and that’s engaging sufficient human staff to handle emergencies.

The more I think about this idea of AI use by New Orleans the more sense it makes. As long as it’s a human asking the emergency protocol questions and dispatching first responders, falling back to tech for filtering overwhelming call volume during large incidents is a good idea.
Also, human resources cost money and 911 centers already struggle financially. People don’t want more taxes, and that’s how more staff and equipment is funded
On top of that, there’s a nationwide 911 staffing crisis.
It’s not an easy solution, and ai is a tool that can help.
I hear you, but imagine the alternative where it takes many tries dialing 911 to reach a human or you never do because the system is overloaded
