“if you don’t support Ai powered privacy ignoring surveillance devices you’re ableist!”
Crazy way to frame this shit.
And if you think medical device companies don’t support their products well enough, just wait and see metas support…
I recently tried to help a friend track down a company for one of their mobility devices, but it had been sold 3 times and I couldn’t get an answer from any of the companies about who to speak to for replacement parts.
So they ended up getting a new device altogether…
And capitalism got a boner. For the insane prices for medical devices, would be nice if they actually committed to long term support. Im still completely sure that tech companies would be even worse.
They’re just trying to whitewash the pervert glasses.
This is what we want AI for - To improve the lives of people. Not to create slop.
Unfortunately we also can’t trust a single AI company right now not to be a privacy nightmare or knowledge hoarding corp.
We need to prevent abuse of this tech, but it should not come at the cost of disabled people. Some ideas I have that could balance this out;
Full control of these devices must be in the hands of the user. For example the source code should be open so it could be audited and the user must be allowed to change the os.
Any data that these glasses gather for the purpose of accessibility needs to be protected under hippa and similar laws. This should also extend to other things like biometrics and health data in general. There is no legitimate need for ad companies to have this data, regardless of source.
LED indicators must be prominent, and the camera needs a physical cover for when not in use. These measures should also be mandated by law.
It should be illegal to show unskippable ads or to prevent the use of adblockers. One, these devices are right next to the eye, so flashy ads could more easily induce seizures and migraines in some people. Two, disabled people shouldn’t have to have ads shoved in the very devices that allow them to interact with the world. Doing so is a form of profiteering off of disability.
We need to not only have very strong anti stalking laws, but we need to be addressing rape culture in general. Technical and legal measures are great, but without cultural change, they will only ever be bandaids. I don’t have all the answers to this one, but it needs to be at the front of our minds whenever we make laws to address it, or create new tech that could exasperate it.
If you have more ideas please share, we need to be looking for solutions to this rather than excusing stalkers, or vilifying disabled people.

The faces that wear these glasses need smashing
