Minecraft and Minetest (now Luanti) let you host your own server, so you wouldn’t really gain anything from federation. Honestly, I’m not sure what benefits ActivityPub would have for games, except maybe Newgrounds-style sites.
I actually remembered that when writing this! (though I couldn’t remember what it was called) It’s definitely cool, but more in the “Doom running on a pregnancy test” way.
You could make a federated mod database (aka NexusMods replacement) that uses torrent for distribution to reduce stress on the servers. Could work a bit like PeerTube.
This doesn’t make any sense
“Minetest says naur” what are you trying to convey with this gibberish?
It’s the word no with an accent
Yeah I know how australians “talk” but what does minetest says no mean
They’ve rejected suggestions for server federation
https://github.com/luanti-org/luanti/issues/7993
https://github.com/luanti-org/luanti/issues/15082Okay. So what does federation mean in the context of a videogame? Will I be able to craft an iron toothpick from my piefed account?
That would be a 3D engine thing not a social media thing
But depending on both of the instances with different software (a game and a forum platform, in this case PieFed if they both support OAuth (the stack that lets the users sign in on one platform with an account on the other)) you can sign in with that PieFed account
I’m glad someone knew, thanks ^^
Yeah, either unified login. Like, you only need one place where you enter your user credentials, and you use the self-same credentials to log into any server out there. Guess it’s a convenience thing, now that what feels like 90% of all people online have no access to hardware keyboards or screens larger than 6.5".
Or, going beyond that, something like OpenSim’s Hypergrid: You have a player character on one server, and you can teleport to a wholly different server, any server, inventory and skin and all.
I guess we can all imagine how that’s going to be horrible: N00b makes new player character on a non-creative survival server, can’t be bothered to mine or grow or craft or even look for anything, teleports to a creative server, stocks up their inventory with all kinds of stuff and goes back to the non-creative survival server, decked out like a god.
Must be from a Star Trek episode or something
Star Trek episode you thought?
Minetest says NAUR, Luanti and Minetest at Tanagra
What? Apples and oranges. Game servers are centrally hosted. You can already host private servers in some of these, like Minecraft, it’s just not federated with other servers because that kind of defeats the point of private servers.
Not for the account servers. Account servers can connect to the game server and merge the data from the payers in it. If multiple accounts from the account server join that same game server the data from those accounts get merged before being sent back to the game server to lighten the load on that server. Like multiple users from other instances to a community on one instance in PieFed/MBin.
For private servers it internally can be secured with an auth token, encryption and/or its literally just a whitelist
This and the game server will be a part of an instance which does both (game server for one, account server for the other)

Timberborn just came out with automation that includes an HTTP API…
okay I might have to get that game if these are the kinda shenanigans they got
I had so much hope for that but from what I could see in testing it only outputs true or false values
Considering that they surprised us with it rather than including it in the public experimental branch, I think there’s a reasonable chance they’ll be updating it once they get some player feedback. It definitely feels like a stub that’ll get expanded in the future.
Also, even if each lever or adapter can only transmit one bit of data, with enough of them you could encode whatever you want…
You could transmit a single bit, but the construction required makes it totally impractical for use during a normal game and pushes it far into endgame.
Minecraft has Drasl, a replacement account/authentication server which isn’t federated, but if there was demand for it, I’m sure it wouldn’t be impossible for the developers to introduce 🤔

I want the source code for fortnite so bad. It could set millions free of windows. Also I’m morbidly curios what their network stack looks like.
