Once we took my dog to a park on the bay but we tried to avoid letting her go in the water because she would need a bath afterward. It wasn’t a particularly hot day but after trying to go towards the water twice and being told to stay with us, she started walking slowly, hanging her, head and panting heavily. A few minutes later, she started to limp. I checked her feet to make sure she didn’t pick up a burr or foxtail and couldn’t find any sign of the problem so I turned to walk back towards the car. She refused to follow. I went to pick her up, worried that she might be injured and she darted away.

Finally, I gestured in the direction of the water and said, “Fine, go swimming.”

She took off running only pausing once to let me catch up before she would have lost sight of me on her way to the water.

The strange part is, she’s not a particularly smart dog except for when she is being emotionally manipulative. Also, for the record, she was pissed about needing a bath when we got home.

    Edit: forgot the dog tax.

This is too real for me right now. I just took mine to the vet last week thinking she had some sort of neck injury only to figure out a few days later that she was having anxiety separation attacks because I went back to work after taking a week for Xmas off. $400 bill but at least I have a supply of emergency doggie pain meds now.

Yeah, I used to have a 80lb pittie. He thought he was a lapdog but thankfully didn’t want us to carry him around.

@ickplant@lemmy.world Gryff definitely thinks he’s a lapdog, moreso, even, than his 52lb #pittie predecessor (she was more-insistant on laying next to me; he wants to be on me). Fortunately, the 65lb dog we adopted was 8lbs overweight (so, now that he’s in proper trim, he’s “only” 57lbs).

My wife’s dog — the void to the right side of the photo — often wants lap-time, too, but is significantly less-insistent about it (which is good, because when you have 100+ of bullies arguing over who gets to actually be on the lap, it can get a bit fraught).

My 80# lab will not only lay on me, but get up just to drop his full weight back down on me. Fuckin jerk.
