Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Weaponization of Tesla and ICEEnglish
3·4 days agoSo the family being delivered to ICE has to hope a benevolent hacker community can somehow hack that particular vehicle within the 20 minute window of a drive to a concentration camp? Does this sound reasonable to you?
I suppose maybe in the future as car hacking gets more common and attrocities from our government worse, there might be hackers viewing protests from the sidelines specifically waiting for these situations.
Does Biden’s law, or any for that matter have real impact today?
I haven’t heard of a situation in which a kill switches was activated. This does not mean it hasn’t happened. The fact that it exists can only lead to exploitation in the future. It’s also being normalized as people don’t speak against it.
Is this 3rd party control easily removed with a software update?
No. I’m a mechanic and learning to hack. All car systems are different. One day when I’m confident in my abilities I’ll share my knowledge to help others.
Your answer is deeply disatisfying.
Unfortunately yes

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Weaponization of Tesla and ICEEnglish
131·5 days agoThere are researches who have already shown it’s possible to see a cars location, stop it, and unlock it’s doors. People have also hacked into car cameras and seen in peoples homes etc. Also due to Biden’s 2024(?) Infrastructure Act all new cars built have a kill switch that’s accessible by a “3rd party”. Besides the 3rd party, no backdoor can be made that can’t also be accessed by good hackers

1·5 days agoIt does work just fine and that’s okay. One feature that’s killer on Plasma is auto theme switching (and night light which they both have) so you don’t burn your eyes out after dark. Would be sweet if Mint had this feature too

2·8 days agoI was thinking about that limitations would exist although I don’t know what they are at this point. Just getting options here from other people. I do think I want to create something 16bit or even have more detail with 32bit (still a 2D game). It seems like all my interests are coming together around Python and saw that GoDot has a plugin to allow the use of Python over their in-house scripting language. So with GoDot via Python I could make my game have neat new abilities such as the depth of field and particles from games such as Octopath Traveler and Songs of Conquest. Then I would be limited to New consoles but with a retro pixel art aesthetic and forego retro console releases. This way I can really learn and apply Python knowledge and it would benefit my various interests/hobbies.

28·8 days agoI’ve been using Mint Cinnamon for years and after having used Plasma on a number of different setups Mint feels so antiquated. It’s not even close, Plasma is far superior. It’s so much more modern and snappy feeling and you can do so much more with it if you want. Cinnamon makes you have to figure to look in applet settings to then find the setting to modify the start menu. So unintuitive. Among a bunch of other examples I could give

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is it better to buy OEM unlockable phone from Amazon instead of from eBay?English
7·14 days agoBe careful buying a phone from eBay. There’s a scam where once you get the phone the seller calls it in as stolen and the IMEI is blacklisted (so the seller gets insurance money). There’s nothing you can do to stop it. My Pixel’s IMEI slot 1 got blacklisted but slot 2 (esim) is okay and I’m using it without issue, though limited to one esim at a time now.
