Actually yeah. It feels like voice / videos were kind of tacked on. There isn’t a really good web based chat tool that doesn’t require some sign in and configuration. File transfer isn’t like that and people can easily drop links to third party services in any chat.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK there are sites that offer you a temporary email address for signing up for services that require one (like some Lemmy servers)
1·3 years agoAnother option: Gmail supports the “+” operator. If your email address is: Alice@gmail.com
You can use an email like Alice+eBay@gmail.com
To sign up for eBay. Now you can filter all of the garbage sent to that address easily! Bonus, you get to see who’s selling your data which is always frustrating and entertaining.
But discord supports sending messages to people who are offline. It kind of breaks the paradigm if certain features require full synchronous communication. Maybe supporting p2p transfers during a video / voice chat would work though.

26·3 years agoMost normal users won’t care about any of this because it’ll shake itself out quickly as has happened with Mastodon. But if you do care, join up with a smaller server that plays nice with everybody and enjoy the whole fediverse.

I don’t understand. I love free software more than the average person, but I choose the communities I belong to based on more things than the license of the underlying technology. What else do I need to learn?
