Socialism@beehaw.org•Canada’s Wildfires Are Out of Control Because of Cuts to Firefighting BudgetsEnglish
3·3 years agoOntario’s premier, Doug Ford, blames campfires for the fire. But, as the opposition has noted, his government cut the province’s emergency firefighting budget by 67 percent — or $142.2 million in 2019 — and never restored the funding.
Ohhhh ok that makes lots of sense. Good work as always Dougie.
Is there any chance the recent media frenzy has given them a perspective when they didn’t feel strongly before? Any chance they can be swayed to recognize trans people aren’t hurting anyone and are just living their lives?
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It sounds incredibly difficult and frustrating.
Internet hugs.

World News@beehaw.org•JPMorgan prepared to pay $290 million in settlement with Jeffrey Epstein victimsEnglish
1·3 years agoEpstein related news is always hard to read but these paragraphs really aren’t sitting well with me.
Monday’s settlement stems from claims filed last year by an unnamed woman, using the pseudonym Jane Doe, that the bank knowingly benefited from and facilitated Epstein’s sex trafficking operation. The woman, who alleges she was raped and trafficked, sued on behalf of a “large number” of other victims of that operation.
“We all now understand that Epstein’s behavior was monstrous, and we believe this settlement is in the best interest of all parties, especially the survivors, who suffered unimaginable abuse at the hands of this man,” JPMorgan said in a separate statement Monday morning.
The first paragraph says JPMorgan “knowingly benefited from and facilitated Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.”
But the next paragraph says “We all now understand that Epstein’s behavior was monstrous,"
So my main question is who exactly are the people who just found out that benefiting from sex trafficking others/minors is monstrous? and what on earth took them so long?

LGBTQ+@beehaw.org•How are you dealing with all these new anti-trans/LGBTQ+ laws?English
18·3 years agoEvery time I hear about rights being taken away I become more bold about my queerness.
Same with my straight cis partner. He actually begged me to paint a trans flag on his banjo because the main online banjo forum was being anti-trans and he was like “Well I don’t want people in public thinking I’m a bigot just because I play banjo”
Granted we’re a straight passing Canadian couple so these new anti-trans laws haven’t directly affected us but he’s wholeheartedly an ally and I’ve identified as bi for as long as I can remember so we do what we can to push back against anti lgbt (or generally bigoted) behaviour.

While reflecting on our personal experience is useful it is important to acknowledge that our experiences are anecdotal and do not necessarily demonstrate truth.
