27·10 days agoAn eon ago they made a PC building guide that was riddled with mistakes and had to pull it down again and I think that’s still where most of that comes from.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•PC Gamer: "I'm brave enough to say it: Linux is good now, and if you want to feel like you actually own your PC, make 2026 the year of Linux on (your) desktop"English
7·18 days agoI’m using a QD-OLED monitor and love HDR for movies or tv shows but with gaming I have several gripes that don’t make me enjoy HDR as much, funnily none of them caused by Linux.
A lot of games suffer from pretty terrible HDR implementations so it might just end up looking worse than SDR. Additionally, at least on this display tech, HDR is a trade-off between stable brightness (TrueBlack mode) or peak brightness (Peak mode). I find TB mode to not really pop enough to justify HDR, but peak mode to be too distracting for gaming since turning your camera can quickly change the overall brightness and make the image flicker.
I would say in theory HDR could be a huge increase in immersion for gaming but the tech and execution isn’t really there for me yet.
HDR support on Linux though I find is in a pretty good spot if you’re not opposed to setting a few env variables.
I like (hate) how in the other version people are claiming that it’s not sexist but in this one suddenly people are confused who’s supposed to be the one who’s wrong.

4·2 months agocan you use it with Steam Deck?
There wouldn’t be anything stopping you but it won’t provide a much better experience than the already built-in hardware and won’t run anything but basic VR apps at the resolution and frame rate required.
I’m losing my Vive with Windows.
You should check out Monado via Envision! I’m still using my Vive on Linux through this open source VR stack and it works pretty well.

Games@lemmy.world•Linux gamers on Steam finally cross over the 3% markEnglish
4·3 months agoA lot of games received their ports during the Steam Machine era, used outdated technologies like DirectX to OpenGL translation, and never got updated, so it’s not surprising unfortunately.
You will also most likely still make that difference back over the cycle of one console generation through better game deals and no subscription fees for online play.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is every person involved in a movie listed in the credits?
54·3 months agoYou don’t see a plaque when you walk into a building listing everyone who laid a brick as part of the construction.
We totally should do this though. Imagine how cute it’d be to have a construction worker be able to visit a building they helped build with their family or friends and point at their name engraved somewhere with a happy grin.
No one has such a tangible impact on shaping our world as people who create, they should be credited no matter the medium.

Maybe I’m not old enough but I don’t remember a time before game DRM, when it was physical games they required you to have the disk inserted to play. The only difference was they were easier to crack and less invasive without online requirement.
