Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your favorite thing about being a parent?English
16·7 days agoMy favorite thing is learning things together. My kids express interest in things, and sometimes we do them together. When my first kid got interested in playing an instrument, I picked up the one I had not played in 10+ years, and we (re-)learned together. (At least until they got way better than me.) Other things we have learned together: playing tennis, snowboarding, 3D printing, building hutches for rabbits.
I thought there was a list of rules for social interactions that I could and would eventually learn, and then I would not be confused all the time, made fun of, ignored, and blamed for all communication failures.
I looked into VaultWarden recently, and I would be hesitant to use it for a business. In the latest release, you cannot create an organization because of a bug in the web ui (https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden/issues/6638), and the fix has not been released because their build pipeline is broken (https://github.com/dani-garcia/bw_web_builds/pull/224). I get it is the holiday break, but hosting it seems to require some hands-on maintenance.

Autism@lemmy.world•What are some fun hobbies to do as someone with autism?English
19·29 days agoIf you like games and game dev, you are probably better off getting a job doing regular boring non-game programming for some boring company, working 9-5, and then making games as a hobby. Then you can make the game you want at the pace you want with the people you want.

I used to have a UDM Pro, a Unifi rack mount switch, four APs, three cameras, and two mini POE switches. I sold it all when I moved recently, and now I just have 3 cheapish routers running OpenWRT.
I wish I kept all the Unifi stuff.
Do it.
But how can I trust you?
You can’t.
Can you trust me?
No.
Use https://www.passwordstore.org/. Sync it to a trusted person’s git server. Put the gpg key on a usb stick and give it to them. Write the password to the GPG key on a piece of paper and give it to your lawyer with instructions to give it to your trusted person in the event of your death.
Spokes and nipples: Several wheel builders I trust told me to use DT Swiss Competitions. That is all I have used. No complaints.
I bent three Velocity Blunt 35s. Now I use DT Swiss XM 481’s even though they only come in black.
Edit: disclaimer: I probably bent them on either rock gardens or jumps. I would not hesitate to get Velocity rims for a road or gravel bike.
Edit 2: neither of these are cheap, unless you are comparing to carbon aero dentist wheels or something
No, I believe it this way. It used to be one service that had access to everything it needs. Now it is microservices, so each microservice is caching a bunch of stuff, but of course all the wrong stuff, so every request requires at least one network call downstream. Thus more memory usage and slower.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Why can't light rail use the same rollingstock and tracks as heavy rail?English
27·1 month agoLight rail is typically used in situations where it is fitting the trains into smaller spaces, often sharing space with other modes of transport. Building it to a heavier grade would cost more and offer no benefit. Even if you spend the money to build a light rail line to support a longer, heavier, faster train, you could not run that train anyway, because the spaces is shared, the turns may be too tight, the bridges may be too low, there may be no space for platforms. It is more cost and space effective to have separate lines.
Note, many light rail networks use standard gauges, so they can use standard maintenance equipment.

Formula 1@lemmy.world•2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - [PRACTICE 1] discussion threadEnglish
1·2 months agoI am much more interested in ANT-HAM, ALB-SAI, and HAD-HUL-ALO than in NOR-VER-PIA.
I knew this was coming since the results of the 2016 Democrat primaries. I am furious about it. I am furious at the people who do not vote, and those who do not inform themselves before they vote. (I am also obviously furious at the billionaires and their lackeys, the bigots, and the grifters. But they are the minority and should be outvoted easily.)
I moved. If I am going to live somewhere where I have no influence over politics, I may as well live somewhere more pleasant.

You think Chuck “My job is to keep the left pro-Israel” Schumer gives a shit about America?
