It was kind of the last in a long line of Universal movies that bombed at the box office and then went on to become cult classics after home video release.
My four favorites, in roughly five year increments:
Tremors Mallrats Josie and the Pussycats Scott Pilgrim vs the World
IIRC it did “okay” here too but had a bloated budget and unrealistic expectations because of all the big names involved.

I actually agree that the first half was great and there were some solid bones and performances but I don’t think there was a break movie just below the surface of FF. Nothing we have seen or heard from that third act suggests Trank’s cut would have been demonstrably better.

It’s easy to joke about, but I feel like this is a microcosm of the problems plaguing Hollywood. The notion that a franchise routinely closing in on $2B a movie at the box office is somehow not profitable speaks to how absolutely unhinged the budgets are going in.
