DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Alternatives to Google Maps for navigationEnglish
10·17 天前I use OsmAnd+, works fine for me.
Disclaimer: I don’t often go to places I’m unfamiliar with so I don’t need directions very often, but when I do it seems to get the job done. YMMV.
Nope. Terrible signal/noise ratio. My video watching is mostly peertube and YT when I can’t find something elsewhere.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you guys know people who are awful human beings, but end up being super attractive, smart and loved by everyone they seem, but you can see through their bullshit and don't like them?English
9·3 个月前Yup. He wasn’t very attractive (but not ugly either), but was very good at talking to people. Manipulating them and playing them off on one another, delivering just the right amount of praise or scorn at the right time. Complete narcissistic asshole if you knew him well. Not to mention really racist.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is there any good private AI chat bots out there for freeEnglish
7·3 个月前OpenRouter has some decently powerful free-to-use models, but I’m afraid as far as LLMs go ‘free’, ‘good’, and ‘private’ are going to be pretty mutually exclusive if you can’t run one locally.
I usually use CopyQ. Has all sorts of stuff.
If you have to sell it with spam, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be garbage.
I don’t know if I’d call myself a privacy pioneer but I self-host some stuff and share/trade services with a few friends.
As someone that’s been screwing around with SBCL recently, that’s pretty nifty.
Hm. I stand corrected. I could swear it did both ways.
I’ve had some trouble with PDFs that were just images of pages of text (easy way to tell, assuming you’re on linux, is run
pdftotexton it and see if you get anything). There’s a utility calledpdfsandwichthat will use Tesseract to OCR the images and add text to the PDF.That might help too.
Yeeeah to get nice results you have to do a fair bit of tinkering. Almost never worth it unless PDF is the only thing you can get.
I just checked and tested it, works for me. Is there anything unusual about the PDF?
Calibre should be able to convert from one to the other. Pandoc as well if you prefer CLI things.
Nothing specific, though a quick search makes it sound like metrics-tracker might be of some use. And org-ql could probably help with sifting through data.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some of the best realtime scientific data websites out there?English
5·4 个月前If you accept data that’s updated in realtime but not being actively sampled in realtime, this satellite tracker?
I usually use croc, though it requires the receiving party to be around to receive it immediately.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Did anyone else not even know who Charlie Kirk was!?English
21·4 个月前I wish I could say I didn’t, but I knew who he was and what sorts of things he said.

I might actually, I have someone dropping by a spare laptop they don’t want in a few weeks and I was going to toss xubuntu on it kind of by default, but maybe not.
