  • Christmas at it’s heart is a religious holiday, it deeply bothers me, to be immersed in Christian family values for what now seems to almost two months out of the year.

I’ve never been a member of the Judeo-Christian faiths, I didn’t have a particularly good upbringing so I’m not really close with my family. I’m addition I don’t have children and I have zero plans on becoming a parent. So in short, this holiday is not for me.

Then to add insult to injury and you have the blatant consumerism. Where you are forced to be a good capitalist and spend money on gifts you can’t afford to buy gifts people for don’t really want it. Yay.

Edit: After scrolling I was reminded of the music. Holy fuck is the music bad. It amazes me that there are people out there who will happily and VOLUNTARILY put this drek on. As a listener of hard rock and metal holy crap does the music set me off.

Hypothetical situation, you are a normal person you’ve likely struggled all your life with bills and debts and then one day you randomly find yourself a billionaire. Perhaps you inherited it, or won the lotto. What would you suggest a person in that situation do? This is would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, , you could finally not have to stress about money, but in order to save your soul should you give it all away to charity and go back to your normal life as though nothing had happened?

Edit: I was legitimately curious what the ethical solution would be if one were to find themselves in that exceedingly rare situation that I described. But okay looks like I ruffled a few feathers by asking.

  • I think this is the correct answer, outside of large cities it is not legal to build apartments or row houses in many places in the States. It would probably be significantly easier to skirt the zoning laws to buy a plot of land and put 100 tiny houses on it, than to attempt to get some sort exception granted to the zoning in order to build an apartment or row house.

  • Same. I came to Lemmy because Reddit sucks, I’m looking for memes, cat videos, humorous and/or thought provoking content.

Instead my all feed is filled with an echo chamber of political content. Not gonna lie, Lemmy is forum that takes itself away too seriously, I don’t interact because I don’t want to argue politics with strangers online, and I know any differing options get down voted to hell.

I really wish Lemmy had a little more fun engaging, apolitical content. If it did, I’d be all over it.

  • I think this comment really nails what’s irking me amount newer Trek. It used to be a show that was written in a way that regardless of your politics, anyone could watch, and it would make you think. It was a show that would sneakily slip in progressive ideas that could make you second guess your perspectives on the world.

Now there is no depth to it, it just slaps you in the face with politics.

This is probably gonna be a hot take, but I think Star Trek should be written in a way that is appealing for conservatives to watch, but regularly slips in metaphors which challenges their world view. Trek was at it’s best when on it’s surface it was a fun adventure show, and the politics was on a deeper level.

Out of curiosity do you have any evidence to back that claim for those raised in an environment where you have a high degree of science education? Like I know without science to explain the natural world, religion makes “sense”. But as long as you have a strong knowledge base in science I’m not convinced people would be easily swayed by religion.

For example, I was raised without religion, and I’ve never seen much of a reason to learn about it. That being said whenever I hear someone talk about religion it sounds particularly absurd to my ears. “Sky Daddy will fix all your ills, you just need to trust in sky Daddy. Sky Daddy doesn’t like it when you X.” I’m sorry, what? Uh no.
