Technology@beehaw.org•Dutch students create modular electric car "you can repair yourself"
4·14 days agoYou all are correct that in the current climate automotive manufacturers would never allow something like this get on the market at large.
However 2-3 decades down the line, when car owners have gotten a reality check about the longevity of current & probably worse near future cars, the market demand could reach a point where people would give a simple repairable electric car a really good go and by simple I mean genuinely as simple as possible for an electric car.

1·15 days agoApple’s side loading is just EU as far as I know.
Apple’s sideloading is somewhere between a ridiculously off the mark compromise they’ve lobbied for and malicious noncompliance.
Doing so is against the Discord TOS, but it’s basically running a Tamper Monkey script. I did this twice to delete all the messages I’ve sent to my ex.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Does Nintendo ban Nintendo accounts opening up eshop from a hacked 3DS / 2DS?
4·20 days agoThere is no certainty in these things, Nintendo could always do a big fuck you banwave many years later. Though you are probably fine.

Technology@beehaw.org•Woman felt 'dehumanised' after Musk's Grok AI used to digitally remove her clothes
72·21 days agoAi makes photoshopping trivially easy, so of course now this is bigger problem than before. This is not going to go away, so society will adapt. Humans can live perfectly fine in the jungle not covering up their unmentionables, so in a few decades this will be a non issue I would guess.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Gamers Are Overwhelmingly Negative About Gen AI in Video Games, but Attitudes Vary by Gender, Age, and Gaming Motivations.
21·1 month agoI’m pretty sure that you could make a realistic game where all plants & buildings etc use AI generated textures & no one would ever notice. Basic assets like these can be generated very well with great variety & this has never been art. Some people just grabbed a camera & took photos of bricks, houses & plants on the street & in the wild & then uploaded their work to an asset store.
Anyway compared to AI assisted game development there are so many worse things in the industry. Like gacha mobile games or denuvo. Also I think people are super naive to think that studios above a certain size (like 20 employees) would even be able to make games without using AI at all. There would be always at least 1 employee that would find ways to speed up their work in secret, typically way more than just one.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Publisher reveals and immediately cancels new Postal game after fans accuse it of using AI generation
3·2 months agoIt’s pretty much guaranteed that many AAA games out over the past 2 years had AI generated elements. Though finding these is not plausible. Telling about separate grass or tile textures if they are AI generated or taken from the asset store, or god forgive Ai generated assets taken from the asset store is basically impossible.
Alternatively imagine if an artist draws a concept art of an in game item & then uses image generation for creating the actual game assets. How will anyone find out?

If they started doing what you are implying with the current level of their Ai, then they could file for bankruptcy a few months later. Serving clearly marked, but super well aimed ads is their best bet right now I would think.

Operating Systems@beehaw.org•Are there any operating systems with devs that don't have a history of openly abusing others?
3·2 months agoHumans are generally quite awful & even the kindest nicest people are terrible sometimes. Put together hundreds of humans & It’s guaranteed some of them will be awful+ & drama is guaranteed even if everyone is above average nice, so no there is no such usable operating system.
I’m inclined to think so too. Then again in 2015-16 I also thought Trumpspeak is intentionally like that to appeal to a certain less educated and elderly demographic.

6·2 months agoI don’t think most customers -for real- are disliking the new capabilities however limited they think they are. It’s just the force feeding and there are also security & performance concerns. All the while Windows is on an enshittification death spiral even without Ai.

Space@beehaw.org•The answer to the The Fermi Paradox could be that space is full of dead aliens
3·2 months agoThe main argument is that mostly civilizations don’t become space faring or rather perhaps becoming space faring is close to impossible.
Being able to leave your home planet in a functional, safe & unimaginably fast aircraft is one thing, but pockets of civilizations surviving on other planets is another. No one has a clue how terraforming a planet would look like on a much more developed level, but it’s plausible it’s basically impossible to do without waiting thousands of years for your compatible life to establish a proper ecological cycle.
Basically no one has proven yet that it’s possible to build a small self sustaining habitat on any planet. Elon talks about going to Mars, or used to anyway, but this is an important problem. Can you imagine humans for real building a megastructure on Mars that can sustain a settlement? It feels way too problematic tbh, even if you had 10% of the World’s GDP to give it a good go.

that will kill the project in the cradle
