I like to call it a significant career change.

Big fan of Immich.
I have a couple thousand photos that were taken since around time When blackberry was big and before. Older family photos I’ve scanned. Home videos from vcr tapes. Stuff I wouldn’t want to use up my space on cloud drives but it’s sooo nice having them in Immich and organized.
I have local backups and offsite backup btw, and redundancy in the server itself. But Immich is great. Paid supporter.

There is a start trek voyager episode like this. It’s a great one. It’s called Meld, in Season 2.

Exactly. I don’t live on a long street but I know about half of the people on my street. I intentionally make the effort. I don’t need to be best friends with anyone but we face all the same local problems so why wouldn’t I want them to have my back, care enough to keep an eye on things as I do for them.
It takes effort to be outside and say hi and make a little small talk and learn their names, pets and kids.
Worth it in every neighborhood I’ve lived in.

Not shocked. I bought one four years ago, had a ton of issues. After many attempts they send me a new one with the exact same issues. So I have two and neither one works. I’d rather clean the floors myself than fight it.
Their software is garbage, their hardware is garbage.
Anyway based on that experience, I have no doubt their software is full of exploits and issues.
Not to reduce the impact of this article but it does point out:
Attackers need physical device access first, limiting the risk mainly to technically skilled people with a Shark device.
Similar situation, experienced professional user but I’m running kubuntu at home. I just posted to another user about not wanting a project pc. I want to use my computer, not fix it or tweak it. It’s not other distributions are bad, it’s that this one is fine for me right now and it’s not windows.
I made the switch on my main pc (from Windows) to Kubuntu about 2 months ago. A friend had switched about a year before that and said it was fun to use so I tried it and it stuck.
I don’t see myself changing, it works. I don’t want a project, I want a computer I don’t have to think about. I actually enjoy using my pc again, feels like I’m back in early days when my computer did what I wanted it to do. Forgot what that was like. Anyway my upsides are not other distributions downsides, it’s just what I have now.
For context, in industry for 20 years, previous linux admin, dev and eng, I’ve used probably 15 distributions in my years, and I run a home lab server too.

It’s everything with any memory or processing onboard.
I’m seeing it in my industry, devices are increasing in price every quarter to 6 months. These all cost businesses more money than even a year ago, and those costs will be passed to us.
It’s easy to call Apple out, but understand that any device in your house with any memory from robot vacuums to home surveillance cameras to routers are all affected by this drain of chips and components.

Maybe someone will enjoy this as much as I did but this news story about a bear sighting… But I don’t want to say why. I want the nonsense to wash over you as it did me the first time I saw it.
I have another too, this tiny frog, fiercely squeaking it’s battle cry with all all it’s might. It never fails to remind me of how Nibbler on Futurama looked cute but was actually a powerful race of creatures.
I want Lemmy to continue and so I’ve added to the monthly support.
I used sync up until about six months ago. Using Thunder now.
I appreciate the years of service and have no regrets for all the payments I’ve made, however it’s time to move on. Malicious or not, the result is the same and the app is outdated and broken and there are far better options.

This is why I do it. It’s not necessarily symmetrical, just roughly even weight distribution to prevent a heavy side.
This one is new to me and was pretty fun with good questions.

Troy was under flash flood warning yesterday, so I probably should have had a boat. It was very wet.
