    It might be achievable if you cycle, never step foot on an aircraft, eat a local vegetarian diet, live in a small space heated with a heat pump, and buy solely used durable products. Again, there’s too much carbon in the supply chain and government services like road maintenance

    Of course, you are miles ahead of the US.







  • Yes, Minnesota has more solar potential than Germany. However, German electricity is 2.5x more expensive per kWh than Minnesota due to low efficiency decisions like turning off nuclear. This is having severe consequences to industry and those unable to afford to install and run air conditioning.

    Solar in Minnesota is >60% more costly per kWh generated than wind. Yes, building solar in Becker recycles the transmission lines and gives a different covariance, but I am skeptical it is cheaper than simply building 100 more wind turbines and battery storage next to them to transmit in times of low generation.


  • Yes, that is the argument coal companies paid “environmentalists” to make, and thanks to 40 years of stalled nuclear development, we have killed the planet.

    It is extremely expensive to set up because we can’t standardize it due to lawsuits. The hope is small modular reactors and new generations will change that. As we safely extend the lifespan of nuclear power plants, the upfront costs are being amortized over longer and longer periods making them cheaper.

    It is not eternally earth toxic. More responsible countries than the United States recycle spent nuclear fuel. 95% of spent fuel was reused. What remains are highly radioactive fission products with short half-lives (30 years) which are safe after a few decay rounds, and long half-life but low radioactive actinides where the main concern is that you don’t ingest them.

    For a heavily nuclear powered country like France, the total waste produced from the beginning of its nuclear power program until today that cannot be recycled would cover one football field a few feet deep. France also has the lowest CO2 equivalent per capita emissions from its energy sector of any developed nation on Earth.

    The entire planet is cooking. Hundreds of thousands will start to die annually. We must educate ourselves about solutions and implement every last one that works. Nuclear power has the lowest death rate of any power source per kilowatt hour generated. Please learn about it.






  • I assume this was I-90 west of Rochester, which is where most of the wind is sited. Sadly it is nowhere near enough and still only produces 25% of the state’s electrical needs whereas neighboring South Dakota and Iowa are over 50%.

    Solar and wind have very different potentials in the state. Minnesota is at the Northern terminus of the wind corridor which they take advantage of. However, it is one of the worst states for solar irradiance potential.

    Sherco solar replaces 2.4 GW base load coal with a planned 910 MW of solar and only 3 GWh of storage. This comes across as insufficient in a snowy winter in a state where conversion to electrical heating is a must.






  • That is not how humans work. People will continue as normal until severe symptoms emerge. That is why an 80-90% preventable cause of death, cornary artery disease, is the leading killer in the developed world. People do not eat the diet and obtain the exercise necessary to prevent it even though they know how.

    In addition, most people do not have the wealth or luxury of not going to work to seek shelter from heat. They have to feed themselves and their families. They will stay in the heat until it is too late.
