If I remember correctly, we were able to restore folders from the shadow copies. I certainly didn’t go file by file. I might have used a tool to do it. But as you pointed out, it’s not a proper backup so we had to do quite a bit of reconciliation to make sure we restored everything and document anything we couldn’t restore.

Yeah, shadow copies on Windows servers are snapshots of files. They allow users to see previous versions of a file.
It’s not really intended as a backup solution on its own, but some backup software does use the volume shadow copy service (VSS) to perform backups on Windows servers.
I was basically restoring files from this prompt in Windows.
Once I had to restore an entire organization from shadow copies because the IT director didn’t believe in off-site backups or using endpoint protection. The whole network got a ransomware that included the backups, but did not include the shadow copies on the main file server.
At least I got to help them build a disaster recovery procedure, and pick out a new EDR.
Just watched the gas price go from $1.110 to $1.500 in my town in Canada. Very glad to be driving an EV.

341·2 months agoReolink doorbell cameras don’t need to be connected to the cloud. They can record to an SD card or upload to an FTP server. You can connect to them with RTSP and run your own NVR if you want too.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•is there any reason to try CachyOS over EndeavourOS or are they pretty much the same?
42·2 months agoHow comfortable are you using the terminal to install and update your apps? EndevourOS and (I think) CachyOS do not have a GUI software store to pick your apps from. You typically install software using pacman or yay. They are great options if you’re comfortable with it. But if you’re new to Linux or just want to stick with GUI tools, then I’d stay with PopOS or Bazzite or Linux Mint or something like that.

81·4 months agoI’m an American living in Canada. Black Friday happens here and it’s really weird to me. In the USA, it happens the day after Thanksgiving, which always falls on a Thursday. So Black Friday makes sense because many people have Friday off (or take it off) and so they have a day to shop for the upcoming holiday season.
In Canada, Thanksgiving does not happen on the same day as in the USA. It happens on a Monday in October. But Black Friday still happens the day after American thanksgiving, which is basically just a random Friday in November for Canadians.
The only thing I will mention is that I don’t know of any Canadian who lines up outside stores for them to open so they can snatch a crappy deal on a TV. I’m sure it happens, but I think most Canadians just need to go to work.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a video game that you just don't get the hype about?
381·5 months agoI don’t think Silksong is a AAA game. It’s a $20 game made by an indie developer with a relatively small team. It just happened to have a lot of hype because it’s the predecessor to the insanely popular Hollow Knight.
Agreed. I’ve never seen foxes like that downtown. But a friend of mine says they’ve seen foxes down by the Global Affairs building, so it’s very likely.
I think that is it. The Rideau Canal locks in Ottawa.
I mean, technically migrants are people who choose to leave their home country for a new one. Refugees are forced to flee and seek asylum in a new country. Not that I’d expect anyone supporting this administration to understand that nuance. It’s not like these people are fleeing from an actual danger anyway.

It isn’t relevant toward identifying you or your ability to operate a vehicle. So why does it exist? Like you said: no reason at all!
Yeah, that’s kind of my point. 3 of 4 stores in Ottawa aren’t profitable is probably an indicator that Toys R Us (at least in Ottawa) isn’t doing that well.
Merivale is the one that will probably close soon. A few months ago, they sold the property and put the “store closing” signs up, but took them down when the sale fell through. I assume it will close again when they sell the property again.
The only one that I believe hasn’t closed or tried to close is the St. Laurent one. Even the one in Gatineau apparently had closing signs, but I don’t know if they actually closed or not yet.
2 of the 4 stores in Ottawa just closed and a 3rd one is going to soon. I don’t think Toys R Us is doing that well.

Actually yes. The attack actually happened during the first week of the new director being there.
No, there is no indication that the old director had anything to do with it.
