ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies took a man into custody Wednesday after he showed up outside their headquarters with multiple Flock cameras in the back of his pickup truck.
Authorities arrested Jevon Martinez for damaging Flock cameras in Rio Rancho in May. Then, Wednesday, he posted video on social media appearing to show him driving around Albuquerque and taking down automated license plate readers once again.
In those videos, he comments that since the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office ended its contract with Flock last month, those cameras should no longer be out on the streets.
"Just for the record, I am not stealing these. I am not destroying them. I am simply returning them to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department,” he said in one video.

Take it to a jury!
The defense attorney should explain why these are a fascist violation of all of our rights.
You know, so that they’re all well informed before they decide whether or not to convict.

There’s no intent to permanently deprive if you literally take something to the authorities for disposition which is a key plank of theft. Not criminal mischief if they’re not damaged either.

I appreciate this kinda armchair lawyering. I aspire to speak this confidently about things I have an approximate knowledge of.
Ya this is on par with saying I wasn’t shoplifting I was going to take it home to make sure it works then return it to the store because I am such a good samaritan.
Why do you folks think that joyriding and grand theft auto are different statutes? Mens rea in theft is very important and it has to have an intent to deprive. A jury wouldn’t believe your example, but this dude actually DID bring them to the sheriff. You could argue civil tresspass to chattels or some local level minor property charge for unauthorized use if they didn’t think they were depriving someone of their property. But it’s not theft.
A jury would go for it I bet.
I hope they don’t bother to prosecute the case.
