Hello friends,
I’ve noticed months ago a glaring issue with AI slop image generator enthusiasts, when they try to sell you a model that creates slop ‘in style of [insert artist]’. Obviously we all know this shit sucks, but there is a bigger picture that will eventually lead to muddying of the artists’ actual style.
I encountered this initially with Schiele actually. Someone on instagram shared a painting, attributed to Egon Schiele, with a date and everything. Four billion likes. Funnily enough, if you type Egon Schiele into bnet.lab8.cz (pinterest), you get this on the first page of results (and a couple more AI slop of this type of bullshit).

Why is this bad?
Firstly, Schiele never in his life painted a conventionally attractive person. This shit is very misrepresentative of what he was doing. So why do these get billions of likes? Because it’s porn for the eyes. AI models seem dead set on making everything look like an e-girl onlyfans model, and of course sex sells. And secondly, nobody will ever double check if it’s real, if the artist really made it. They will click the heart and feel cultured for liking art. Scroll on.
We can say “oh well, but the true art experts know the difference”. And? It’s not the ‘true art experts’ who make art popular. Well. Kind of (think industry plants, etc), but that’s not the point. And let’s not forget those fuckwads who generate this shit, because it makes them feel like the artists their name they put into the prompt.
In this endless chase of clout and upclicks, the strokes of the dead will be slowly replaced by machine output, and nobody will notice.
I am so fucking tired of this fucking bullshit.
I leave you with Goya.

Thanks!
xoxo

porn for the eyes might be the stupidest thing i ever said today

You weren’t kidding. Thanks.
I think this is related; an observation I made on content on the internet - we had clickbaits for years, sure, but recently it shifted to just fucking blatant lies. YT is full of things like “<movie title> BY <some famous director> OFFICIAL TRAILER” and, yeah it’s just some fucking slop with 8 billion views. You can say anything, nothing matters.
its a little scary how quickly people accepted it as a viable form of entertainment.
the other side of the coin is that there are probably billions of people who cant tell the difference. you and i cant really comprehend it, because we’re constantly bombarded with anti-slop propaganda, but id wager that the majority of normal people (read: not computer touchers) cant see it. theyve just been slowly and steadily cooked like a frog without warning.
i belong to a secret illegal underground prince fan community where bootlegs and videos have been traded since the 80s. periodically, bootleggers will try to slip in fake tracks or fan remixes that are obviously bogus. guess what’s started happening in the genai era.
the prince estate has even released some genai-ified tracks tried to pass them off as legit.
to recap: new fans are introduced to this artist with work he didn’t make, sold under his name.

I’m sure someone out there said something along the lines “well, as long as they then discover the real stuff, it’s okay! maybe they wouldn’t discover this artist otherwise.”
but first impressions are a major part of art. you will subconsciously always compare to what you saw/heard first - in this case machine slop.
pretty sure someone was just thinking “i can sell this for money”
i don’t know why i’m so optimistic all the time. you’re right of course
