All the fine pigment powders and mica, probably. My lungs are fucked enough at it is and there’s always a little cloud whenever I open a jar or go to decant any, and I never remember to mask up each time.
The turprntine and other oil paint solvents aren’t too healthy to be breathing in either though.
And I’ve definitly slipped and burt myself with the soldering iron a few times now too. Oh, and the lead solder too actually now I come to think about it.
Also, I think cheap gold leaf tends to have a lot of lead in it too, doesn’t it? I’ve got a fuck tonne of that lying about and on various things too.
Chemically, acetone.
Physically, my table saw, statistically speaking.
I don’t have a nail gun, but they can be modified to shoot in air, rather than against wood, that would be pretty dangerous at close range.
I once tripped on the cord of a table saw and nearly fell into it. Definitely one of the most dangerous tools in the shop.
Beyond just cutting off fingers, they can kick back boards hard enough to break ribs.
I’ve got a bottle of goo gone. That’s some pretty nasty stuff.
Mine is Novacan black patina. Don’t drink it, smell it, touch it or look at it.
Oh, and lye.
Christ, just looked up the safety sheet for that black patina, you aren’t joking:
- Aqueous dilute solution of Nitric Acid & Copper Sulfate
- Transparent light blue liquid. Viscosity of water. Odorless.
- The theoretical LD50 (rat/oral) for Novacan Black Patina is 1913 mg/kg
- H300 Fatal if swallowed.
Yeah. And one time my cat jumped on the table while I was staining. I spent the next half hour scrubbing her paws with dawn soap. She’s fine.
I wear gloves, eye protection and a garbage bag when I use it.
Maybe my hydrofluoric acid for integrated circuit delayering, but it’s dilute enough to be sold at Walmart as rust remover, so I’m not sure. I’m still taking precautions.
If the metric is injuries so far, then it’s probably my xacto knife, but those have all been minor injuries.
Technically, I have some spare microwaves that I may harvest the transformers out of. Maybe. Microwave oven transformers are really good at killing people who should know better, so I’m not sure I want to risk it even if I know I could take enough precautions to be safe. MOTs are pretty much perfectly optimized for accidental fatal electrocutions.

Knives, hammers, chemicals, saws, etc, none of them are dangerous until wielded. So ultimately, I’m the danger.
Mine is cobalt based drier, highly toxic. Good thing I never actually paint. XD
Other than that, probably glass. Nasty cuts, awful if you get a chip in your eye. (Wear eye protection! Glasses don’t count)
What is the cobalt drier used for?
It’s to accelerate drying when using oil paints.
Lino cut chisels- remember to always cut away from yourself!
Scalpels and other knives- remember when cutting cardboard to not slice towards where your thumb joins your hand!
Hot knife- do not attempt to remove melted Mylar from the tip until the knife has cooled down!
Cadmium paints- clean the sink and drying surface of all remnants before you wash your dishes in the same sink!
Turps and other solvents- keep the windows open and when you feel a bit woozy open them a bit more!

Technically its is all these knives. And out of those it is the 5 skiving knives at the bottom that I’m most respectful of. Not only are they razor sharp but when skiving you aren’t cutting directly down to the work surface and I’ve caught myself putting my hand in really silly places before. Yet, never injured myself even once with any of them… yet.
But in reality the only things I’ve properly injured myself with have been a stitching chisel and a belt/strap cutter pictured below. The chisel I was using, stupidly, to go through that super thick part of the pouch its resting on. Thats a whole centimetre of layers of thick, resin backed leather. And I didn’t have a pull board thing yet. It refused to come out and when I eventually freed it, I scraped it against the web of my left thumb making a big scratch up my hand that bled profusely and took forever to heal.
The belt cutter was the worst cut. I tried to change the blade… you lift that little red cap but the blade is actually secured within it. It is incredibly stiff and when I pulled it the whole thing gave way and I sliced my thumb open on it. That took a really long time to heal and even longer to stop being sensitive, so even when healed I couldn’t do anything because it hurt to much to use a needle.
I envy your collection, even if your thumb-cutting story made me physically cringe.
I want to get more, a proper head knife and some fancier skiving knives. Problem is I want to make little sheaths or covers for all of them but its becoming apparent how much time it will take just to make a ton of those vs doing anything else…
