I’ve been using Reddit is fun on my phone using my account’s API key and it appears the ship has now finally sailed.

I would be curious to know if others are still able to access RIF/other third party clients, or not, so we can get some basic idea if this is a single account or them finally closing the last loophole.

It’s also completely valid to not care at all about Reddit because clearly this is an abusive company and for me personally, I can only see this being beneficial for my mental health.

You could make a burner reddit account, sign up for a developer key, fork the source from RIF, feed it the developer key and keep making free queries to the API with your dev key. Essentially in the final update for RIF the developer made the application just hoover up old.reddit.com and pass it into the reader.

With your Dev key bypassing the cost to browse old.reddit.com the application worked near flawlessly for about 3 years. As someone who setup this zombie app under “my own development and testing” I can confirm it is now dead.

Fun last things the RIF dev gave us before it went out was methods to near completely block data collection about us, I always got the most generic reddit page ever. No algorithm, just essentially /r/all unfiltered it was great.

RIP, guess I’m here more than before now.

Didn’t know that was possible. I might have wanted to use that feature 3 years ago, but on the other hand, I didn’t look for that feature 3 years ago. I was fed up with Reddit and still am. It was fun whil it lasted, but those days are gone now. I’ve gone back a few times, but its all bots and ads now. Some local and small communuties might still contain humans, but those are getting poisoned by right wingers.

From the niches I hang out in I’d argue that the “keep politics out of my XYZ” mofos are losing pretty hard right now. Granted given how niches work we almost certainly do not visit the same fandom areas. It was absolutely glorious seeing the entire Silksong subreddit at war with Asmongold for 2-3 weeks.

I left after Apollo went down, I loved that app. I’ve only gone back to browse if Reddit comes up in a search engine for something I’m looking for. Even then, l try to find other sources of info. I absolutely do not log in though, if I have to login to see whatever info, then it’s not really important.

I thought they stopped all this like 2 or 3 years ago. Surprised any 3rd party apps were still working or being used.

There’s actually a new loophole where an app called morphe with an extension called patcheddit uses Redreader’s (or infinity’s, but the dev has to pay for that one so don’t use it) api key to get third party clients working. If you want to keep using RIF, see this https://github.com/wchill/patcheddit, I tried it with Sync as a fun test and it worked well. As a bonus, you’re less likely to have your account banned as I had mine banned last year for what I presume was using my personal api key to patch Sync, and you also don’t need to use the Redreader app directly like many comments are suggesting. I presume what happened and why it stopped working for you is because Reddit revoked api keys for everyone except those who had api keys for bots and things like that. Hope this helps :)

I’ve been using redreader since the crackdown. It’s one of two approved 3rd party clients since reddit themselves are too lazy to make their own app accessible, which is the reason why they keep redreader working for free.

I paid for Infinity to use the API. But I got permabanned for quoting song lyrics and stupid mods not understanding context so I made the move to Lemmy and it’s generally better anyway. So cancelled my subscription to Infinity last week.
