Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines, which had been struggling for years, announced it will cease operations.

Spirit had been seeking a $500 million federal bailout from the White House. But those talks failed to yield a deal, leading the airline no choice but to stop flying “effective immediately”.

You mean to tell me being the worst airline to the point you become a punchline is a bad business model? 😯😯😯

Hard disagree. Not crashing is a ridiculously low bar. They had hidden fees and reduced customer service to the point I felt more like cattle the couple of times I had to fly with them. The problem here is these companies have poor regulations and over consolidation. It was the deregulation of the industry that fucked it all up. Also, given its environmental impact flights shouldn’t be dirt cheap anyways. We should build out high speed rail throughout the country.

TIL that Spirit had never had a plane crash in their entire existence. They were at least doing something right. Oh well.

Well, they also had less flights than other airlines. Like a lot less.
Also, southwest, jetblue, Hawaiian (97 years), and frontier have never had a fatal crash either. So not that impressive.

In theory, yes. But in reality, reduced competition means less need to compete. Worse service over the long run and higher prices.

I cannot believe Joe Biden caused a whole airline to go out of business.

That isn’t as joking as you might think. The Biden administration got the merger of Jet Blue and Spirit Airlines called off.

Because surely this has nothing to do with their customer base having no disposable income for travel. It must just be the oil thing

I liked their graphic designs, and they were often the lowest price for where I wanted to go. I didn’t fly enough to run into their notorious problems.
