There just aren’t any good guys in this story.

Meta and its platforms suck and the world would be a better place without them. People who are claiming online platforms should be held liable for being “addictive” suck, too. Should I be able to successfully sue my Lemmy instance admin too because I like to spend time here too much?

I’m reminded of my parents limiting my forum time because they thought I (then a preteen) was “addicted” to forums in the mid-2000s. I still don’t think they were right about that, and I don’t sympathize with people now claiming the equivalent thing about Instagram et al. either.

To me, this is the result of years of social media companies operating with relatively little oversight. Governments are only now starting to introduce stronger regulations, but platforms like Meta spent years setting their own rules because there simply weren’t many limits on how engagement-driven their products could be.

yes, and are thereby killing any opportunity for us, the people, to solve the problem ourselves by operating platforms independent from big tech >:( Meta will be able to comply with any regulations governments will ever think of, their business depends on it; fediverse instances meanwhile…

Why do ppl spend hours on slot machines in bars and casinos?

FB, IG, TikTok, Candy Crush etc. are all using those exact same techniques to get you hooked like junkies.

Unlike a good video game, you feel completely depleted after a “session”.
