Another week in the books. Let’s chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

Didn’t have time (or energy) to look into my issue with Mihon chapter updates so I stuck with catching up on the stuff I post - mainly Unexciting Date, with an odd Mary-san and Maid Skater getting their surprise updates.

Things will probably stay this way for the next few weeks but I’ll be keeping my eyes on the community anyway in hopes of finding something new. Can’t let the backlog get too short, you know.

Finished Magic Knight Rayearth 2. What an ending. It might actually be more unhinged than the Magic Knight Rayearth one. It was a pretty good time overall, but if I’m being honest I was enjoying the art more than the story or characters.

Anyways since I finished that, I went and started too many dang things in return. This week I started reading:

    • The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity - My main complaint with the anime was that the female lead didn’t seem to have much of a personality. I started reading the manga because I heard she gets more characterization later, but it’ll be a while before I catch up even to where the anime left off.
    • Magus of the Library - I started reading this one because I heard it was excellent. So far so good, but after over 2 hours I’m only 2 chapters in. They’re long chapters (nearly 50 pages each), and they’re each chock-full of nerd words. They use a kanji for library that’s so rare it appears in 0 words in the jmdict Japanese-English dictionary (圕)! So yeah this is gonna take me a while to get through.
    • My Sister Knows - I started reading this one as a recommendation from a friend. It’s a story about a man and his sister. He’s an office worker, she’s an idol. The thing she “knows” is that her brother is great at coming up with punchlines for jokes. So far it’s not super strong, but I’m only 6 chapters in and it’s a lot easier to read than Magus of the Library so I might as well keep going and see if it gets better.
    • Damedol and Her Only Fan in the World - A story about an incompetent idol and her only fan. I’m only one chapter in, so I can’t say too much about this one.
    • My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999 - A story about a girl falling in love with a pro gamer who happens to spend time in her MMO guild to relax. Seems decent so far, but again I haven’t even caught up to where the anime left off. It’s gonna take me a fair bit of time to get to the end, but it’s somewhat motivating knowing that the story is complete. No idea how good the ending is supposed to have been, but I guess I’ll find out.
    • Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku - Once again I started this one because I really loved the anime. It’s taking me a while to get through though; it’s not quite as difficult as Magus of the Library is, but they keep using nerd slang from over a decade ago and half the time it’s not in my dictionary (though I can usually figure out what they’re saying if I google it). It also doesn’t help that the female lead will randomly start talking like a medieval samurai just for fun. That said, this series is hilarious. In case you somehow haven’t noticed the theme, it’s gonna take me a while to get caught up to the end of this one.

I also got caught up with Witch Hat Atelier this week. Heart-wrenching stuff!

I love the heck out of Damedol. Selfishly, I just wish it updated more often. The SL releases have been inconsistent and fallen behind a bit. There was an official licensing announcement back in October, but no news for a release yet that I have seen.

I have been super busy this past week, so I have hardly had a chance to read anything. However, there was one series that I randomly saw in the MD updates that I checked out on a whim:

This story focuses on an idol that failed to gain an audience and ended up deep in debt and to pay it back, she ends up working on a tuna fishing boat. So, it is a very specific slice of life, but with the exceptionally eccentric cast of characters on this boat, it is pretty absurdist. There is a lot of heart in this one though with Haruna trying her best to get back into the idol industry and realizing that there are more important things in life, like the friends you make along the way. The series is this weird mix of extremely specific, well-researched tuna fishing information and an absurdist gag series. There are just two more chapters to translate, and it has been building up to what seems like it will be a nice conclusion.
