Pug, do you know if the density/amount of soldiers is somewhat accurate?
My only comparison is Foxhole (MilSim-MMO) and there this really only happens when MGs are missing on both sides.
I’m not super informed on WW2, but this is probably a little clustered. As my Marine grandfather used to jovially say whenever people crowded together, “One grenade or a good bowling ball’ll take you all out.” While infantry were expected in WW2 mechanized warfare to stay close to the tanks to support them, close is a relative term - these are likely bunched up to give the artist room to portray more of them. I think American infantry in WW2 did something like 5 yards between each man. Soviet and German infantry were probably similarly spaced?
On the other hand, when attempting to overwhelm defensive positions like this, terrain and supporting troops can force units into uncomfortably tight groupings, especially when combat is vicious and prolonged enough to end up hand-to-hand.
