You can totally free slaves as a telvanni if you want. In the quest where you are asked to put down a slave revolt, if you instead choose to help them the mouth is like “oh, well, anyways…”
Yeah, which is why I’d probably focus on freeing those slaves in subtle and bombastically clever ways. Just because you are a House Telvanni member, doesn’t mean you instantly condone the enslavement of fellow sentient creatures. That was one of the first things I did in Morrowind (just before joining one of the Houses) was the quest line to free slaves! I feel my magister would be part of the Twin Lamps.
