Never Mormon, just curious if these events are things that most Mormons are aware of/if there are some apologetics?

I wouldn’t say most are aware, it’s never really taught about. There are always some apologetics but the majority of people would say it was a mistake of the settlers and shift blame away from the leaders of the church.
I never heard anything about this at church. I learned about it on my own.
