Hi, I’m Tetris but my friends call me Tee.

I like microcontrollers, 1970s progressive rock, and SciFi not written by Andy Weir. I am a snob, but I am friendly. Would you like some tea?

Hey Tee! Nice to meet ya.

What’s the beef with Andy Weir? I am a sci-fi fan, but I must admitI don’t know anything beyond he wrote the Martian. I got lots of tea for Christmas, it smells so fragrant. What sort do you like the most?

I wonder if there’s a comm for meeting and chatting like this, it’s nice.

        Hi Deceptichum, greetings likewise!

He reminds me of a geography teaching tucking his kids into bed; good for film exposition and spoken dialog, but lacking in subtlety or prose. What kind of Sci-fi do you like?

As for teas, I’m an Oolong in the morning and Roobois in the evening. I do like Christmas teas though, and my ex loved to get an Tea advent calendar to try out new varieties. What’s your favourite so far?

Deceptichum has you covered on the sci-fi and tea, so I’ll ask about the prog. That sub is one of the few things I still miss from the old site.

I’m all about ELP, Utopia, Gentle Giant, and Rush. Somehow Yes and Genesis never really hit the spot for me.

I learned so much from that sub, it genuinely was amazing. I’m definitely in the Genesis and Yes camp, along with Harmonium, Camel, Alan Parsons, and however one classifies Blue Oyster’s scifi stuff

Interesting. I think I’ve listened to Camel once it twice before, but never got around to Harmonium or Alan Parsons. It’s been so long since I did any musical exploration though, I’m probably due to branch out a bit. I always go on such a deep dive when I find something I like that I’ll find myself knowing everything about a few bands while still having huge blind spots in the broader picture.

hi, Tetris nice to meet you, I’m recently started playing with esp32 boards, trying out meshtastic/meshcore. I like sci fi and wrote a novel I want to get published.

when you mean tea, you mean nice famcy tea, or British black tea with milk? Used to love the former, but living a few years in England changed me.

Hey Albert, nice to meet you too - I hear a lot of buzz about MT/MC but I have to admit I haven’t quite found a usecase for it in my projects. What are you using yours for?

What kind of sci-fi are you into, and what’s your novel about?

I have to admit that british black tea is the only black tea that I truly drink with milk. Something about the tanins makes it mix better, compared to the black teas you get in Germany which do not mix well with milk at all

What do you miss most food/drink-wise about your homeland?

I’m trying to set up a local network for my “friend group”, we work in local politics and mutual aids, and I want a back up communication channel in case we lose our signal groups (because being against capitalism is legally terrorism).

my book is about a generation ship in a 400 year old journey. I follow a family line with chapters being short stories about them. as I track an ever changing societies, histories, and cultures… it’s deeply personal and full of generational tales.

i lived in many places, Barcelona, Palestine, England, Scotland, now midwest USA, i do miss Mediterranean food culture, that are so diverse and all superior to whatever I have in Michigan

How does it work over long distances though? I thought mesh was more for local communications between devices, and then relays into internet for anything wider. If internet goes down, aren’t you limited to your neighbours?

Your book sounds really interesting – I’ve read one or two generation ship themed books, but they always end violently (religious priest overthrows corrupt leader, or population kept naive to the ship and all questions are stifled out, etc)

By Mediterranean food, you mean like decent salad (lemon, vinegar, olive oil) and bulgur pilaf?

how does meshtastic work over distance? in theory really good, as all nodes act as a repeater. in practice? not so well, might have to install some nodes around the city. they aren’t expensive, but they aren’t cheap either.

by Mediterranean food I mean the food culture of basically every Mediterranean nation. they are all so good. and it’s also less focus on a big piece of meat and more on the whole assemble, and generally varied and healthy meals.

              what do you do?

                  meshtastic internet!!!

been thinking about it, it’s open source, the “sending messages” is already there it just need to be automated in a browser…

in theory tcp/ip over lora is possible. and probably not that hard to program.

only question is if doing something like that would clog up the network.

Got any sci-fi / fantasy books you wanna recommend? Love Andy Weir and Fantasy.

Personally in terms of fantasy, first ones I think of are Mistborn. Love that trilogy. Been meaning to read the rest (or at least more of) The Cosmere.

Currently reading the second novel in The Expanse series.

Recently I’ve been intermittently bedridden and needed a lot of content to consume. I read much of the works of Edward Ashton, author of Mickey 7, inspiration for the movie Mickey 17 (and presumably also the username of a prolific lemmy user). I enjoyed that book and its sequel; additionally I very much enjoyed another book by the author, Mal Goes to War.

Because of some similar themes, I was recommended the book series Undying Mercenaries by B.V. Larson. I wouldn’t say I recommend them; honestly, I think they’re pretty poorly written, but the universe building is pretty solid and the character development surprised me in a good way. The humor is juvenile but fun. Also there are 24 of them so far, so they passed the time pretty well. All of the books in this paragraph are decidedly sci-fi.

Along those lines, I also enjoyed Expeditionary Force. It’s about a common soldier who surprisingly finds a tool that shapes humanity in an expanding universe of aliens. I never actually finished that series (I was listening to it while driving back and forth from work, which was interrupted by COVID, then I forgot where I was in the series and never picked it back up.)

The Red Rising series is, or was, pretty great. It’s about a lowly caste - starting on Mars - overthrowing society. Again, I only got three books in but never got past that. This wasn’t a fault of the series - I had a kid and changed jobs around then and didn’t have time to read as much.

I have previously read books by Mark Lawrence and enjoyed them a great deal, though they’re not without flaws. As such, I picked up the more recent Library series, which was pretty good, though not my usual fare. However, I was able to share enjoyment of it with my wife, which isn’t true of most of what either of us read. That series is very fantasy. In fact, everything I’ve read by that author is.

You mentioned Mistborn so you’re familiar with Brandon Sanderson. I don’t really like that story much myself - or didn’t when I tried it a long time ago, anyway - but I did enjoy two series of his: The Reckoners, a story about superheroes; and the Cytoverse, a story about … Well, a lot of things, but it starts with starfighters and gets more complicated. I would call both of those stories pretty sci-fi.

Bobiverse is in my top three book series. It’s about a guy who dies but then manages to essentially become an AI and take advantage of that status to do a lot of big, good things.

The Last Kingdom is in my top five for sure. It’s written by an actual qualified historian about a major transitionary period for England (with some artistic licenses taken regarding the history, but from what I understand every book is at least based on something that really happened). This one also has a Netflix series associated, though I don’t know how good that is.

Finally, I have to assume you’re familiar, but just in case: Douglas Addams and Terry Pratchett, both unfortunately passed, have plenty of excellent works even beyond their more well known stuff.

Hope some of the above provides you with entertainment! I wrote each section as I remembered the relevant series, so I apologize if my tone was a bit meandering.

I was halfway through composing a recommendation for The Expanse in my head before I even finished reading your comment. It’s really top tier.

Dresden Files isn’t quite fantasy, but it isn’t quite anything else either, and I think a story that involves wizards and vampires and faeries can be considered fantasy even if it does take place in the mid 2000’s. Very highly recommend. I read it for the first time about two years ago and was immediately upset that I didn’t read it way earlier, it very rapidly became one of my favorite book series I’ve ever experienced.
