If you have been here for longer you probably already have a feel for what I want this community to be. I thought about moving to “gems” (of the internet) to have more freedom over expected content and to avoid confusion. I already have that name reserved. How would you feel about this?

Gems is not the same as Surrealism.
Naming a community so unspecifically, you’re setting yourself up for having to deal with a lot of noise and watering down of the original idea.

You are probably right. I thought about making it gifs only, but that would make it obsolete, as gifs already exists. I will keep the handle, but if anyone has a better name / tagline I will use that everywhere, so people only post that stuff. Hopefully. That way I can still name it * - gems and the handle still makes sense
It is now Gems of Internet Art, other idea would be digital art gems.

Honestly, I’m disappointed. By limiting to abstract/surreal stuff, this was filling a niche. Now that it’s more general it’s more generic.
I’ll look at the content of the new community before deciding whether to subscribe or not, but it was an instant yes before.
I guess it’s the classic “trying to make everyone happy, you end up making no one happy”. I hope the new community doesn’t disappoint.
I subscribed but I think it might be welcome if its reconsidered and or Gems is used for a more specific sub-level of Surrealism content involving gems.
In terms of discoverabillity, I think the benefit of these type of Reddit-like forums is being able to search proper nouns that are larger subject areas and easily latch on to that.
