Not sure. I know in connect the information is there and sharp enough as i sometimes back-and-forth to read elements of a meme. If that snapshot is there, why not serve it up and have it linger if it detects a deleted image?

Ideally, yea. But for simple memes the smaller one is fine. It’s so teasing to see a glimps of it and then it going black

This has been a thing in Boost for at least 5 years. The preview is cached, but pulling the full image fails.

Could you link me to a post where this is happening? I’ll take a look. As others have said it probably is the thumbnail resolving but the full image failing.
It doesn’t seem to happen often anymore, when I made the post it happened quite a bit. Here’s one from today https://lemmy.world/post/17791525 this one works when I open external. This one happens to be an Imgr image, that’s not usually the case. Sometimes the picture doesn’t come up when I click open external, I assume that because it was removed. Thanks for your interest, I’ll provide more examples when I find them
