10·4 hours agoIt’s a good excuse, but it’s bullshit. They wanted to block IA for a long time and just taking advantage of the situation. LLM companies that scrape on mass explicitly don’t use even free APIs to avoid being rate limited.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada’s elite media wants you to serve in the militaryEnglish
3·1 day agoIs the “elite media” now is trying to “cultivating public consent” as the article says, or - as you say - do they try “to find middle ground”?
Both. As you said in the first few words of your comment, my comment was also “Irrespective of the topic <…>” and instead a direct response to you, not the attached article.
Look at how corporate media tried to justify US illegally kidnapping a president of a sovereign country. It’s against both US and international law, but media tried to manufacture consent for it by saying that Maduro was a bad guy.
Now look at flight attendants union strike in Canada where corporate media represented the postion of the government, the airlines and called flight attendants unreasonable for inconveniencing the travelers by demaning that they get paid for full day of work instead of just when they are in the air. That’s clear anti-worker reporting that hurts working people and defends corporate interests.

5·1 day agoOverall, they have a strong bias in narratives <…>
Advocacy journalism is popular for a reason. When average corporate media tries to find middle ground position between someone working 2 jobs to survive and someone owning 10 yacths, it’s refreshing to hear postions that represent 99% instead of 1% of people.
In this particular case, they are pretty open about what they stand for: https://breachmedia.ca/about/
<…> it’s by definition neither independent nor quality media imo.
It’s objectively independent as they are not funded by any single interest group, but actual readers. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their own opinions and perspectives.

3·1 day agoAs I mentioned under another comment, public money - public code should be the solution we move forward to. It negates all the bad incentives created under capitalism and strengthens the public good aspect of open source.

3·1 day agoThey have incentive not to under capitalism and mandate to generate shareholder value. I’m not excusing the bevahiour, but it’s built-in into the whole economic system by design.
The real solution is public money - public code. It removes capitalistic incentives while generating public good.

4·1 day agoFOSS is flawed, but I don’t think that the solution is limiting corporate use. Imagine a world where Linux kernel wasn’t released under open source license. We would have Microsoft owning entire server infrastructure market right now.

2·2 days agoSpecifically, the “Search domains” tool at https://internetstiftelsen.se/en/domains/ lists “Cyberdyne S.A.” in Monrovia, Liberia as the registrant. However, that record does not include a contact name, e-mail address, or telephone number, and “Cyberdyne” is also the name of the fictional technology company in the “Terminator” movie series behind the “Skynet” artificial intelligence network that achieved super intelligence and self-awareness, leading to nuclear devastation).
It’s always delightful to read overpaid laywer explaining to a judge a referece to a cult movie.

Fediverse@lemmy.zip•Has anyone seen/heard any mention of Loops on the corporate media this week?English
3·2 days agoNot sure what you mean by “biased af accounts” as I think this is like 2nd time ever I posted anything about Loops.
And I offered no opinion over “the most petty shit” apart from mentioning that it exists. Is it suppose to be a secret?

Fediverse@lemmy.zip•Has anyone seen/heard any mention of Loops on the corporate media this week?English
5·2 days agoIt’s not really a funding issue. Look at Mastodon when Twitter was bought, Eugen Rochko was able to capitalize on that.
I think the issue is primarily with main maintainer Dan (dansup) being self-described dreamer who jumps from project to project without being able to finish anything. Loops is even partially funded by EU through the NLnet grant, so funding is not an issue. He’s also seemingly hostile to community contributions and already alienated large spectrum of Fediverse developer community. So much so that there is even open letter asking for him to temporarily step down.
While Loops beta state was defintely a big part of it, it’s still was strange to me that it was not mentioned at all on corporate media this time, when in the past they did highlight it.

Entertainment@lemmy.zip•Tim Cook Attends White House Screening of 'Melania' Movie, Prompts Calls for Apple BoycottEnglish
32·3 days agoIn theory it sounds like nothing but in practice it’s a different story. Apple batteries are notoriously shit so when phone went from being able to sustain a full day to dying at the end of the work day it stopped being an useful gadget and became a dead brick. So yeah people were forced to buy a new one to have a functioning device.

Technology@lemmy.zip•TikTok suffers mass outages only days after US took over the websiteEnglish
141·4 days agoFalse premise. The outage was manufactured to implement wanted changes. They even updated algorithm to remove all news related posts from the recommendations.
Adam Presser (CEO of TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC) literally said to World Jewish Congress that on day one after the sale he will ban any critical mentions of Zionists and other anti-Israel sentiments. And both parties openly stated that the whole reason they wanted to ban TikTok was to be able to stop young people from becoming anti-Israel.
